TODAY’S LUNCH: MEXICAN GRILLED CHEESE FROM EGGS TRAVAGANZA

January 19th, 2012

Arturo Macedo and the Eggs Travaganza cart on the NE corner of 52nd St & Park Ave was a finalist for the 2011 Vendy Cup.  I’ve gotten friendly with  Arturo and his sister over the past couple of years, and have enjoyed several lunches from here.  One of my favorites was the Mexican Wrap, an egg sandwich stuffed with chorizo, potatoes and cheese.

One dish I haven’t tried yet is the Mexican Grilled Cheese ($5.50), which I saw Arturo tweet about this morning, and I got a hankering to try.  The power of twitter rears its head again, with Today’s Lunch being the Mexican Grilled Cheese.

FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BURRITO

January 5th, 2012

2 Bullets cut in half for us (normally served whole)

Have you ever eaten a huge burrito for lunch, only to end up in a food coma halfway into a 3pm meeting, drooling on your shirt?  Mexicue believe they have the solution.

Mexicue contacted us recently about a new addition to their menu – Bullets.  Bullets are burritos served on 8″ tortillas and come 2 to an order, plus tortilla chips and salsa for $8.75.  This way you can either share your lunch with a friend or co-worker, save one burrito for after that meeting, or try two different bullets for some variety.

Being the intrepid reporters that we are, we asked Mexicue if we could try out these new Bullets.  They graciously invited us to their LES store for a tasting.

Click through for our report on the Bullets, other new menu items, and details on how you can get a FREE Bullet yourself.

NYSF FIRST LOOK: TACOS MORELOS

December 22nd, 2011

If you’ve ever taken the L train to the Bedford Ave stop in Williamsburg, chances are you’ve seen the Tacos Morelos truck, which usually parks by 7th St.  I believe they have been around for a while, but this was our first time trying their food.

Morelos is one of the states in Mexico, and this appeared to be a pretty traditional Mexican food truck. One of our standard rules is to order any dish included in the name of a place, so for our First Look, we tried two tacos – one chorizo and one chicken ($2.50 each).

CHICKEN TINGA BURRITO FROM EL IDOLO TRUCK

December 1st, 2011

I had to pick up dinner last night on the way home, and the El Idolo taco truck was parked on 6th Ave just north of West 4th St. They don’t tweet their locations, but are often in this spot on evenings and weekends on the east side of 6th Ave, a block up from the basketball courts by West 3rd St.

I’ve had tacos and huaraches from El Idolo, which were pretty good.  Not amazing, but pretty good.  Last night I needed dinner and decided to get something heavier than a couple of tacos.

A couple of people in front of me got cemitas (sandwiches), which looked tasty. I almost got one – but changed my mind at the last minute to a chicken tinga burrito ($7), which came with a small salad of lettuce and avocado.

CALEXICO STILL MAKES A KICK-ASS BURRITO

November 7th, 2011

Madison Square Eats may have come and gone, but Calexico is still there – as they will be year round at Broadway and 25th St.  You used to have to go to Soho or Brooklyn for Calexico, but now you can get their Vendy Award winning food in the Flatiron District.

Guess I wasn’t the only one with the same idea because when I walked up to order, they said it would be about a 20-25 minute wait.  I still went ahead and ordered a chipotle pork burrito ($8) for Today’s Lunch, and asked for it with their “crack” sauce.  Damned if I didn’t get my lunch in 23 minutes.
