STREET EATS: PASTOR TORTA FROM MEXICO BLVD

March 5th, 2012

We recently had a NYSF First Look at the tacos from Mexico Blvd, which were delicious.  Now I was in the mood for a sandwich, and Mexico Blvd has recently been tweeting about their tortas, so that’s what I decided to try – a Pastor Torta, which cost $8.  You can also get beef, chicken or adobo pork.

When I took the sandwich out of the bag and opened it up, an awesome smell came out of the wrapper.  Too bad the Internet doesn’t have Smell O-Vision because if it did, you would be drooling right about now.

The Mexican sandwich came on a soft Portuguese roll that had chunks of marinated pork, lettuce, tomato, onions, jalapeño spears and slices of pineapple.

All the ingredients were crisp and fresh, and the pork had a nick kick, having been marinated in a 3-chili sauce.  It wasn’t overly spicy, but between the pork and the jalapeño spears, there was some heat by the end of lunch.

There was also a bit of a mess by the end of lunch.  The bottom of the roll split apart, making it a little difficult to eat – but there are certainly worse problems to have.  I gladly ate the last few pieces of tender, tasty pork with my fingers.

Mexico Blvd is a welcome addition to the NY food truck scene.  They are still working out a few kinks in the truck, but we had a really nice Pastor Torta for lunch.  You can follow them on twitter here or on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed.

Try Mexico Blvd for yourself and let us know what you think.

STREET EATS: CHICKEN TORTA FROM EL CARRITO ROJO

February 27th, 2012

The new breed of food trucks get tons of press, from their offbeat cuisines to their use of the latest technologies, but you can still get really good street grub at some of the old school food trucks.

El Carrito Rojo may not be a Vendy Award winner, but based on the lunch we had there recently, they offer a solid street food lunch at a good price.  We got a chicken torta for $7, and are looking forward to trying some other dishes.

NYSF FIRST LOOK: MEXICO BLVD

February 24th, 2012

Right after the New Year, we  told you that Mexico Blvd would be coming our way in February.  That’s now…and we had our First Look yesterday.

Mexico Blvd was founded by Jordi Loaeaza and his father Jorge.  Jordi grew up cooking at his father’s side in Mexico, and they traveled around the country learning all they could about different regional cuisines in Mexico.  They moved to the US a number of years ago, and Jordi worked in various restaurants here, including Tom Colicchio’s Riverpark, although I’m not sure in what capacity.

After a couple of days on the street, the menu was revised to reflect the realities of working from a truck.  They no longer offer flautas, but tacos and tortas are still on the menu, in addition to fresh guacamole.

We decided to try each of the 4 types of tacos ($3 each), which is a lot of food.  Don’t try this at home – we’re professionals. Two tacos will probably suffice for most normal appetites.

NEW FOOD TRUCK ALERT: MEXICO BLVD SHOULD BE ON THE STREET NEXT WEEK

February 10th, 2012

Remember that new food truck we told you about just after the New Year – Mexico Blvd.  They had some “unexpected delays”, but should be on the street next week.

BTW, we’ve never heard of a new food truck that didn’t have “unexpected delays” before opening.  There are just too many details to foresee everything.

Click through for more details and some luscious pics from their website.

TODAY’S LUNCH: MEXICAN GRILLED CHEESE FROM EGGS TRAVAGANZA

January 19th, 2012

Arturo Macedo and the Eggs Travaganza cart on the NE corner of 52nd St & Park Ave was a finalist for the 2011 Vendy Cup.  I’ve gotten friendly with  Arturo and his sister over the past couple of years, and have enjoyed several lunches from here.  One of my favorites was the Mexican Wrap, an egg sandwich stuffed with chorizo, potatoes and cheese.

One dish I haven’t tried yet is the Mexican Grilled Cheese ($5.50), which I saw Arturo tweet about this morning, and I got a hankering to try.  The power of twitter rears its head again, with Today’s Lunch being the Mexican Grilled Cheese.
