HOP OVER TO EL REY DE SABOR FOR SOME CHAPULINES THIS WEEK

October 25th, 2011

Want to try the Mexican specialty chapulines, aka grasshoppers?  El Rey Del Sabor, the 2010 Vendy Award Finalist, will have limited amounts at their three carts this week only.

The chapulines have been imported from Mexico and will be available in tacos, burritos, quesadillas and tortas.  Hat tip to Gothamist.

We haven’t had this much fun since the Dos Equis Feast of the Brave truck was here in April with chapulines, veal brains and scorpions (among other things).

TODAY’S LUNCH: SPICY PORK TORTA FROM EL REY DEL SABOR

June 9th, 2011

I was in the mood for a sandwich for lunch, but not a lot of street vendors serve sandwiches.  A good alternative is a torta or cemita from one of the better Mexican carts – and El Rey Del Sabor is one of the best.

They were 2010 Vendy Award Finalists, and have 3 carts – one at 49th & Park, one at 60th & 3rd, and the one most convenient to me, which is the north side of 43rd St, just east of 6th Ave.

They have chicken, beef, pork, tongue, and a few otehr meats, but the one I wanted was spicy pork.  Today’s Lunch is a spicy pork torta from El Rey Del Sabor ($6.50)

TODAY’S LUNCH: TACOS & DINGES FROM EL REY DEL SABOR

April 11th, 2011

With all the attention being paid to the new Korean taco trucks this year (Korilla, Big D’s & Kimchi Taco), I decided to go back to El Rey Del Sabor for some good old-fashioned Mexican tacos.  El Rey Del Sabor was a 2010 Vendy Award Finalist, and they have 3 carts in midtown – 43rd & 6th, 49th & Park, and 60th & 3rd.  Even though the Korean taco trucks have gotten a lot of press, El Rey Del Sabor still had a line of 5 people or so, and more people came up behind me.

While I was waiting on line, a couple of small menu items caught my eye – tamales & pastelillos.  I decided that Today’s Lunch would be two tacos ($2.50 each) and dinges (you know, “stuff”) – a tamale and a pastelillo ($1.50 each).  For those of you not familiar with Wafels & Dinges, that’s where the expression “dinges” comes from.

I was in the mood for a sandwich today, and I haven’t been back to El Rey Del Sabor since they were announced as a 2010 Vendy Award finalist – so I figured out a way to combine both of these ideas.

Today’s Lunch is a spicy pork torta ($6.50) from El Rey Del Sabor.

King of...falafel sandwich

We had a great time at the 2010 Vendy Awards yesterday, and there’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.  As you probably know by now, the Vendy Cup and the People’s Choice Award were won by The King of Falafel & Shawarma.  Click here for our post detailing the winners in each category.  Pictured above is the award-wining falafel sandwich.  But all the Vendy Award finalists had delicious food.
