It’s been a few months since we’ve been to the Milk Truck, and wanted to see what they were up to these days. It was also finally warm enough to have one of their shakes, which we’ve never had before.

There are several grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu, but we’ve tried most of them already. What we haven’t tried is the beef chili, which costs $6.50.

The shakes cost $5.50, which is one of the reasons we’ve never gotten one before. That seems kind of high for a shake that doesn’t get you high.

The other day when we didn’t find the Trini-Paki Boys cart on West 43rd St, we headed over to the NYPL for Food Trucks On Fifth.

It turned out that Milk Truck was there, and they had a nice looking special, the Blue Ribbon Sandwich, which cost $8.

I decided to try the Classic Combo from the Milk Truck.  This was a Milk Truck Classic sandwich with a cup of tomato soup for $10.

Yesterday the NY Times had a feature called Rethinking Grilled Cheese.  To us it was more like celebrating grilled cheese, because we’ve been following and talking about three of these guys for quite some time.

Last June at the Taste of the Parks, we raved about the braised short rib, gruyere, blackberry jam, pickled red onions and watercress on grilled sourdough (pictured above) from Food Freaks.  At the time, we said it was our favorite dish of the day, and there were several past Vendy Award Finalists at the event.

STREET EATS: BACON CHEDDAR BLUE FROM THE MILK TRUCK

March 7th, 2012

The most recent of the grilled cheese trucks in the city is the Milk Truck.  They started out operating a stand at Brooklyn Flea, and expanded to other food events around the city, including Madison Square Eats, before coming out with their truck last November.

The Milk Truck is known for obsessing over their ingredients, from the thickness of the bread slices to everything in between.  They also use an old fashioned sandwich press, which gives each sandwich thick, distinct ridges.  These are among the most visually appealing grilled cheese sandwiches around.  But what about the taste?
