Street Eats: Asian Chicken Salad from Fresh & Hearty

At the end of April, we checked out a new food truck called Fresh & Hearty. It wasn’t one of the better lunches we’ve had, but the owner emailed us afterwards and asked us to give them another try. After all, it was within their first few days out.

Since we previously tried panini and a soup, this time we got a salad, Asian Chicken Salad for $7.

As far as the size goes, this was a decent amount for $7, with plenty of chicken and lettuce. The other fillings – Mandarin orange segments, carrots, celery, red onion and noodles – seemed sparse at first, but it turned out a bunch had fallen to the bottom of the salad. The last few bites were better than the first few bites.

The grilled chicken could have used a few less seconds on the grill, but not by much.

Our biggest complaint were the “crispy” noodles, which were mush, One of our favorite things in Asian chicken salad is the crunchy noodles. They should add the noodles at the same time as the dressing to keep them crisp.

There was also more brown on the lettuce than there should have been.

On the plus side, the sesame ginger salad dressing was tasty, and we were full until dinner.

Fresh & Hearty is trying, but the jury’s still out. You won’t find them on a list of the best food trucks in NYC, but with a few changes on their part, and the right lunch selection, you can do ok.

Fresh & Hearty can be found on twitter here and on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed.

Here’s their panini menu, soup menu, and salad menu.

Dessert Alert: Donut Ice Cream Sandwich from Carpe Donut

June 17th, 2013

truck

The donut world has been turned upside-down by cronuts, but we have a life, and don’t have 2 hours to wait on line for a pastry.

We would much rather get a donut ice cream sandwich from Carpe Donut, and not wait on line at all.

Ice cream has always been our favorite dessert, going back to high school when we worked at Carvel for a year. Ice cream is still our favorite dessert, and putting it on a donut was an interesting idea.

Regular NYSF readers know how much we love seafood, so when Fishing Shrimp hit the NYC streets 1½ years ago, we were on Cloud 9. What’s better than fried seafood?

Over time, we’ve tried most of the menu, but they do change things up every so often.

The newest item on the menu are cod tacos, which are $4 each, or 3 for $10. Of course 3 were ordered.

The Coolhaus “Dexter” Sammie Looks Bloody Delicious

June 14th, 2013

Showtime has teamed up with Coolhaus to create a custom ice cream sandwich called the “Killer Combo” to highlight the  final season of “Dexter“.

If you’re not familiar with the show, Michael C. Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department, who is also a killer. The series’ 8th and final season premieres on Sunday, June 30 at 9 pm on Showime.

To illustrate the dual nature of Dexter’s personality, the sandwich features one dark-side-of-Dexter with a Double Chocolate cookie, one lighter-side-of-Dexter with a Snickerdoodle cookie, and a Tahitian Vanilla Bean ice cream with a ‘Bloody’ Raspberry Jam Swirl.

Now that Mamu Thai Noodle has been around for a couple of months, it’s time to work our way down the menu. We started with Shrimp Pad Siew, then had Chicken Pad Thai.

Next up was Tofu Drunken Noodle, which cost $7.
