NASI GORENG – THE DISH OF 1000 FACES

In our review of nasi goreng for Today’s Lunch, we called it a “kitchen sink” type of dish – made with whatever the cook happens to have around.  We did a little research on nasi goreng and found an article in The Jakarta Globe that explained more about this most fungible of foods.

“In many ways, nasi goreng is Indonesia. It is the unofficial national dish, but it is much more than a simple plate of fried rice. Nasi goreng is always changing, filled with different ingredients and flavors, much like the country itself.  At its most basic, nasi goreng, which has Chinese roots, is steamed rice mixed with a dash of soy sauce and chili, cooked with oil in a frying pan.

TODAY’S LUNCH: NASI GORENG AND PAN-FRIED DUMPLINGS

There are a few restaurants at my hotel, and I had a lot of work to do, so I ordered in room service from the Indonesian restaurant in the hotel, Bugis Street.  Although Today’s Lunch was from a restaurant, it was nasi goreng and fried meat dumplings, both well-known street foods.

FRIDAY’S RECIPE: INDONESIAN MINCED PORK

About a month ago, we posted a Friday’s Recipe for Moo Shu Chicken Lettuce Wraps.  Another recipe that uses lettuce to wrap the food is Indonesian Minced Pork, a popular dish in that part of the world.  It’s a fairly simple recipe that’s pretty interesting and tasty to eat.

For Friday’s Recipe this week, we’re going to keep things easy, both in terms of ingredients and cooking.  This Easy Chicken Satay does not need skewers or a grill, and uses ingredients commonly found in American households.

INDONESIAN STREET FOOD FIESTA

Great pictures and descriptions of a night fiesta in Indonesia from Phingelicious.

There was a fiesta in the town at Jl. Alun-alun Utara, near the Kraton.  We could hear music blasting out loudly, laser lights dancing in the sky, people talking over the speakers, urging more people to come in; mini-train with loud honk going round the area; vendors selling balloons, snacks, drinks – the area was lively and full of people!
