STREET EATS: EGGPLANT PARMIGIANA HERO FROM OUR HEROS

April 30th, 2012

One of the newer trucks on the scene is Our Heros.  We trucked down to the Financial District to try them when they first arrived, but it’s tough for us to get down there for lunch.

That’s why it was great news when Our Heros told us they would be coming up to midtown for lunch a couple of days a week.  We caught up with them on 51st St just west of Park Ave, and were immediately confronted with a dilemma – what to order for lunch.

Since we got a cold roast beef hero last time, we wanted to try a hot hero this time.  An eggplant parmigiana hero for $8 sounded just about right.

If you read our Mobile Munchies post this morning, you will have known that Our Heros was making a rare foray into midtown from their usual spot in the Financial District.  Looks like it might not be so rare.

STREET EATS: ROAST BEEF HERO FROM OUR HEROS

March 12th, 2012

There’s a fairly new food truck downtown called Our Heros.  They have been around since late December, and we visited them once before, enjoying an Italian cold cut hero.

They have a selection of hot and cold heros, salads and soup, with the food made fresh every day.  Nothing here is sitting in the walk-in overnight, like some delis.

The roast beef hero caught our eye, and it cost $9.

I know that $9 is not cheap for a hero, but you do get a lot of bang for the buck.  On a base of fresh, rare roast beef were long blocks of cheddar cheese, sliced cherry tomatoes, arugula, red onions and horseradish aioli.

Even with all the fillings, the taste of the roast beef and cheddar came through nicely, as did the horseradish aioli.  All the ingredients on this sandwich worked together beautifully, and the hero bread held everything together through the last bite.

This was a big, filling hero for lunch.  As I said, $9 is not cheap, but it’s about what you would pay for a top-notch roast beef hero at a good deli, after tax.

You can find Our Heros on Wall St by Water St every weekday.  They tried other neighborhoods at first, but kept getting chased by the police.  The daily specials are still tweeted out, but they are very happy at Wall & Water, and have no plans to leave.

You can follow Our Heros on twitter here, and they are also included in our Mobile Munchies twitter feed and listed in the NYSF directory.

Have you tried Our Heros?  Let us know what you think.

OUR HEROS FOOD TRUCK LOOKING FOR HELP

January 24th, 2012

If you have a mobile food vendors license and are looking for work, Our Heros is looking to hire.

Our Heros serves hot and cold heros, salads and soup. They are usually down in the Financial District, but have occasionally come up to the Union Square area.

They are looking for applicants who have a mobile food vendors license to start working on a truck and cart starting in mid-March.  If that’s you, please call Tim at 347-205-7300.

NYSF FIRST LOOK: OUR HEROS

December 23rd, 2011

On Tuesday we alerted you to a new food truck downtown called Our Heros, and posted a photo of their menu the owner sent us.  It caused a little bit of a controversy because the heros were $9, which people thought was too high.

One of the reasons people like food trucks (and restaurants don’t) is because they are supposed to be cheaper than brick and mortar restaurants without the fixed overhead of rent.  Gas isn’t cheap, but it’s a lot less than NYC rent.

Yesterday Our Heros contacted us and said they sent us the “wrong menu”, and that all heros were $7, not $9.

Since they are a new food truck that we wanted to try out anyway, we headed downtown yesterday for a NYSF First Look at Our Heros.  This was the most patriotic food truck we’ve ever seen, but more on that later.

For our first meal, we went for The Combo ($7).  We’ve always liked Italian cold cut heros, and this one was a nice size, coming in at over 9 inches long.
