Since today is a pretty nasty day weather-wise (that’s nearly horizontal snow going across the picture above), I went across the street to the salad bar at the Morton Williams supermarket on West 57th St between Broadway and 7th Ave. There are better salad bars around, but on a day like today, proximity is more important than excellence.
While this isn’t street food, sometimes outside circumstances intrude, such as weather or travel, and I need to get something else for lunch. As you can see, I still go for mostly meat on a salad bar. Clockwise from top left is sesame chicken, an overdone chicken finger, some pasta salad, curry chicken under the pasta, roast turkey, and a roast pork sparerib. In the center is a chunk of feta cheese. I’m not going to describe each item because the food is only serviceable; nothing to write home about, but it will do in a pinch. At $5.99 a pound, I can usually get lunch for around $6.
They make pretty good sandwiches at this Morton Williams and have a frequent customer card where the 8th sandwich is free after buying 7 sandwiches. Always nice to get a free sandwich.
They also have a made-to-order pasta station with a bunch of different sauces, and the portions are pretty big. For around $7, two normal people can easily split one of their pasta dishes. I’ve had their pasta carbonara, and it was ok. Not the best I’ve ever had, but good for lunch on a cold winter day.
Today’s Lunch was fair, but I didn’t freeze or get soaked. Sometimes the trade-offs are worth it.
