UPDATE: I stopped by Pie Face on my way into the office, and they told me the free mini-pie giveaway doesn’t start until lunchtime.
We don’t usually cover brick and mortar places on New York Street Food, with the notable exception of our Honorary Street Food category.
But our office is on Broadway & 57th St, and we’ve walked by Pie Face on Broadway & 53rd St for a couple of months now, as it was being built. Naturally, we’re curious.
Today is Australia Day, and Pie Face is giving away FREE mini-pies or coffee all day. They have sweet and savory pies, which we hear is the big thing in Australia.
We don’t know exactly which mini-pies will be distributed, but you can see the menu on their website here.
Luckily, we don’t think they serve that other Australian dish – a Pie Floater. This Southern Australian “delicacy” is a mincemeat pie floated in a bowl of thick pea soup, then topped with a dollop of ketchup. It’s served from carts at parks and main thoroughfares all around Adelaide.
Floatophiles claim that once they’ve gotten their fix, they don’t need to eat again all day. They also claim Pie Floaters are best enjoyed when drunk. We think it’s more of a prerequisite!
