The donut world has been turned upside-down by cronuts, but we have a life, and don’t have 2 hours to wait on line for a pastry.
We would much rather get a donut ice cream sandwich from Carpe Donut, and not wait on line at all.
Ice cream has always been our favorite dessert, going back to high school when we worked at Carvel for a year. Ice cream is still our favorite dessert, and putting it on a donut was an interesting idea.
Carpe Donut is fairly new to the NYC streets, having only been around for 2 months. We actually ran across them by accident on their very 1st day, and enjoyed a hot donut.
The donut ice cream sandwich was wrapped in cellophane and kept frozen.
On our first bite, the ice cream was a bit too frozen…it was more ice than cream, and didn’t mix with the donut well.
Thinking it neede to thaw, we put the sammie down for a few minutes, then picked it up again. Those few minutes were crucial.
As the ice cream softened, it got creamier, and mixed better with the sugary donut. Definitely an improvement.
The only thing we didn’t like about the donut ice cream sandwich was the price – $4.50. That’s a lot for a donut ice cream sandwich.
There was also no choice of ice cream. For now they were only serving vanilla ice cream. Maybe if these catch on, they will start serving chocolate ice cream donuts, or even better…coffee. How’s that for an idea, coffee ice cream on a donut!
