Have You Seen These New Waffle Carts Around Town?

If you’ve spent some time in Greenwich Village recently, you may have noticed a few new waffle carts popping up. Time for us to spring into action to see what the deal is.

Augustin’s Waffles has a few carts, one on 6th Ave by Washington Place, one on West Broadway and one on Broadway, all in the Village.

We have also seen the NY House Of Waffle on Union Square West & 14th St, which has waffles and fresh fruit shakes and smoothies. They park right by Morocho and Paty’s Tacos.

Were either of these serious waffle carts, potential challengers to Wafels & Dinges‘ title of Best Waffle In NYC? Let’s find out.

Augustin’s looked good to the untrained eye, but we saw a few troubling signs.

In the window were a collection of Nestle’s sauces such as chocolate, dulce de leche, strawberry, butterscotch, etc. They also had presweetened, pre-packaged waffles for sale.

In the cart was a waffle iron, but the waffles were sitting in the cart pre-made, and put into the iron to be reheated. Not sure why, with a waffle iron in the cart, they weren’t made fresh to order.

It was early in the day, but Augustin’s didn’t have the fruit-filled waffles we saw on the menu, or strawberries. We ordered a liege waffle with dulce de leche, bananas and whipped cream, which cost $6.

Augustin’s Waffles was ok, but for $6, we expect more than reheated waffles and Nestle’s syrup. This would have been a perfectly adequate dessert waffle if we had never tried Wafels & Dinges before – but we have. No comparison.

If Augustin’s Waffles were not great, but ok, NY House of Waffles was neither. The reheated waffles were even more dense, and the chocolate syrup was very sugary and even grainy.

The freshly-sliced strawberry was fine, and at $4, this was $2 cheaper than Augustin’s Waffles, but it wasn’t worth saving $2 for this.

To be fair, there was a lot of fresh fruit behind the counter at NY House of Waffle, and they seemed to be concentrating more on fruit shakes and smoothies. It looks like they have a nice fruit shake and smoothie menu, if that’s your thing.

Bottom line – stick with Wafels & Dinges. With 2 trucks and 5 carts, you shouldn’t have to travel far to find them. If you’re already in the Village, the W&D truck parks on 7th Ave & Christopher St on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from around 7pm to midnight (1am during the summer).
