SWITCHING INTO A FOOD CAREER IS NOURISHING BUT LOW PAYING

Are you sitting at your desk dreaming of switching careers and moving into the food industry?  You’re not the only one, and plenty of people are actually taking the plunge.

But don’t expect it to be as financially rewarding as the career you have spent many years in.  While many people have successfully moved into the food industry, the hours are generally longer, and the pay is significantly less, especially if you come out of finance, legal or IT.

The Contra Costa Times in Northern California recently had an article that went into detail on this topic, from a semiconductor s manager who opened a BBQ restaurant to a software marketer who now co-owns a restaurant.

The full article is here.  The takeaway is that while people are much happier in their new careers, they are making do with much less income.  The tradeoff seems to be money or happiness, but having both seems to be remarkably elusive.

In our opinion, having something to look forward to every day that you enjoy is much better than dreading waking up each morning.  A 2 week vacation to some exotic place is just not worth being miserable for the other 50 weeks a year.
