STREET VENDOR LETTER GRADES MAY BE COMING IN THE FALL

Two lawmakers in New York City plan to introduce bills requiring mobile-vendor health grades and public information this fall.

According to the NY Post, the legislators are currently writing bills that would mandate the city Health Department to post street-vendor violations online.

“It’s data that should be public and easily available,” said City Councilman Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan).  Posting the violations online “is a clear interim measure until we get letter grades.”

Street vendors have been slapped this year with more than a dozen violations for vermin, lack of hand washing and poor food prep, according to data The Post obtained through a Freedom of Information Law request.

Like Garodnick, State Sen. Jose Peralta (D-Queens) is also pushing for letter grades on carts. [NY Post]
