TODAY’S LUNCH: BULGOGI CHOSUN BOWL FROM KORILLA BBQ

I recently had a taco set from Korilla BBQ which was pretty good, but now that I’ve tried 3 tacos from there, I had a better idea of what I like and don’t like in terms of veggies, toppings and condiments.  I also wanted to try a chosun bowl because the tacos were a little too messy for lunch at the office.  They used 2 tortillas per taco, but it was still tough to pick up because the tacos were so stuffed.

Today’s Lunch is a bulgogi chosun bowl ($8) from Korilla BBQ.

They start out with 2 big scoops of either sticky rice or bacon kimchi fried rice for $1 extra.  I opted for the latter (bacon!) as you would expect. It was a tough choice between beef bulgogi or pulled pork, but I went with the bulgogi today based on the server’s recommendation.

Going down the assembly line, I declined cheese and tomato salsa but asked for everything else, which included a lot.  Shredded carrots and cucumber, scallions, sliced mushrooms, spinach and bean sprouts were apparent, but there were probably one or two items I didn’t even see underneath.

Then it was time to choose the sauce.  I like spicy food, so I asked for k’illa sauce, made with a blend of 5 peppers.  There were 3 other sauce options as well.

When I got back to the office, the chosun bowl was much easier to eat than the tacos – and just as good.  In fact it was even better because I had already been to Korilla and knew that I didn’t like cheese and tomato salsa on my lunch.  Many other people do, but now that I knew the menu a little better, I could tailor it to my tastes.  That’s one of the great things about Korilla – there are so many options, you can easily tailor lunch to suit your personal taste.

It took a little time to get through the toppings down to the meat, but the veggies were really cool and fresh, with plenty of heat provided by the k’illa sauce.

The bulgogi had been well marinated in mirin or rice wine and tasted great.  There was plenty of tender beef once I got down into it, and it contrasted nicely with the spiciness of the k’illa sauce and the kimchi in the fried rice.  The bacon in the fried rice was hit and miss – some bites had bacon and some bites didn’t – but it was an interesting fried rice, which was also sticky like the white rice.

And underneath the veggies on the side of the platter was one of my favorite things at Korilla – cucumber kimchi.  These were spears of cucumber with tiny pieces of spicy kimchi on them.  They reminded me of the half sour pickles I used to eat as a kid, but with hot sauce on top – and there were actually two of them included in the lunch! Score!

Today’s Lunch gets an 8.5 out of 10.  There was a ton of food, and it was delicious.  At $8 for the chosun bowl, with bacon kimchi fried rice for $1 more, it’s not the cheapest lunch in town, but it was really good.

Next time I’m going to try a burrito, probably with pulled pork (even though it is high in calories!). Stay tuned.
