As we told you yesterday, Fun Buns is now back serving bao on the NYC streets under semi-new management. The question is – has anything changed?
We ordered one of each bao to see – beef, pork and chicken. They cost $3 each.
Each bao had shredded carrots and daikon, crushed peanuts, and pickled mustard greens (the secret weapon). The differences were in the meats.
We must say, things were pretty much the same as in previous visits, included which ones we liked best and least.
Our favorite was the beef bao. It had the unmistakeable flavor of five spice powder, with cinnamon standing out most among the five spices.

The pork belly was nicely spiced too, but it tends to be fatty.
When we were young, we used to cut every single millimeter of fat off any meat we ate. While we’re not quite as militant as we used to be, fat is still not one of our favorite things.
Other than the fat, the pork belly itself was tasty.
The chicken was our least favorite, not because there was anything wrong with it, but it was just kind of boring.
There was a slight yellow tinge to the chicken that came from curry, but you couldn’t really taste it. A stronger curry flavor would have been appreciated.
The chicken was juicy and tender, with no funky stuff in the mix.
It’s good to see nothing has changed at Fun Buns NYC. In fact, the only change on the menu is you can now get any of the meats on a baguette for $8. Personally, we like the soft buns the bao are served on.
