There were a few things to celebrate at lunch yesterday.

Moo Shu Grill has been promoting their new rice bowls with a $7 lunch special, it was damn cold out and the truck made its first foray to 55th & Broadway (right by our office), and they had Peking duck for the day, which they didn’t have last time we visited.

The menu said there was a $2 supplement for Peking duck in a rice bowl, or $1 in a moo shu, but we only got charged $7 for the duck rice bowl. It wasn’t just us, it was everyone who got this great deal.

Moo Shu Grill, like Fun Buns, emerged from the Bian Dang mini-empire, with a former partner amicably splitting off from Thomas and Diana, who did not have the time to devote to these new ventures.

One side of the rice bowl had sections for cold side dishes. There were pickled daikon and carrots, bean sprouts, a sweet & sour celery salad, and cucumbers. We particularly liked the bean sprouts, which were flavored with sesame oil.

The duck was deep, dark and meaty, and was topped with ginger scallion mayo, fresh cilantro, and scallions.

Duck can be fatty, but the meat was trimmed well. They even tossed in a few pieces of skin.

If you want things spicy, there’s a bottle of sriracha and small containers to put it in by the truck’s window. We recommend putting some on the duck. The ginger scallion mayo didn’t really add much.

Moo Shu Grill had two types of rice to choose from: jasmine and sticky crab.

We chose sticky crab, which was true to it’s name.

Not only was it sticky, but there was a definite undercurrent of crab flavor in the rice, although we didn’t see any pieces of crab. That would have put it outside the price range people want to pay for lunch.

They had a really nice crowd for their first visit to 55th & Broadway, so we expect Moo Shu Grill will be back. Here was yesterday’s menu, but it doesn’t vary much from day-to-day.
