How Was This $5.50 Dark Chocolate Shake?

It’s been a few months since we’ve been to the Milk Truck, and wanted to see what they were up to these days. It was also finally warm enough to have one of their shakes, which we’ve never had before.

There are several grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu, but we’ve tried most of them already. What we haven’t tried is the beef chili, which costs $6.50.

The shakes cost $5.50, which is one of the reasons we’ve never gotten one before. That seems kind of high for a shake that doesn’t get you high.

The truck had a decent amount of people waiting for their lunch after ordering, but since we didn’t order a grilled cheese sandwich, our wait was pretty short. How long can it take to ladle out some chili and make a shake?

On the menu, the chili was advertised as “a mild, thick beef chili, with just a few beans. like Mom’s but better”.

The chili was mild and thick, but there were a large number of pinto beans in the chili. As for the “Mom” part, my Mom was never much of a cook, so it’s not really a fair comparison.

Being a grilled cheese truck, there were small pieces of cheddar cheese in the chili, along with lots of ground beef and a few carrots.

The chili was more tomato-ey than bbq-ey, which is not a good or bad thing. It’s more a matter of which style you prefer. Our personal taste is more along the lines of bbq with few or no beans, but plenty of people like tomato-ey chili with beans.

The dark chocolate shake was a little darker than a milk chocolate shake, and it was thick and creamy and had that semi-bitter flavor of a 65% or 70% cocoa bar. That’s much better than a chocolate shake sweetened with syrup.

We still think the $5.50 price point was a bit off-putting, but it tasted like they used quality ingredients.

That’s the thing with the Milk Truck. They aren’t cheap, but they do use top-notch ingredients in their food.
