We Tasted Tacos at Lumpy’s Food Truck

We were recently contacted by Jeff Harper, who told us about Lumpy’s Food Truck on Long Island. Jeff asked if he could write about Lumpy’s for a NYSF Guest Post.

Having grown up on Long Island many moons ago, we said sure. With a name like Lumpy’s, our interest was piqued. Also, when did you ever seen a food truck with a bathroom!

Lumpy’s Food Truck: Sit-Down Cuisine at Food Truck Prices

It’s hard to imagine ordering from a menu that includes offerings like Grilled Mojo Chicken with peach salsa; or Baja-Style Beer Battered Cod with lime jalapeno cole slaw, pineapple habanero salsa and chipotle aioli, and spending less than ten bucks for your meal.

However, insert the word “taco” after the chicken and fish in the previous sentence and instead of a double-digit price for single digit portions of populist haute in some Long Beach bistro you can get a delicious, hearty feed for a less pocket-lightening bill.

Where can one of these moderately-marked meals be had? At a food truck, actually. A food truck that’s name is in opposite proportion to the tastiness of its fare- Lumpy’s.

The primary hindrance to enjoying a couple of Lumpy’s tacos or sliders (more on them later) is finding the truck. Though if you’re among that breed of foodie willing to step a bit off the beaten track, or at least willing to follow an equally beaten but possibly unfamiliar track, the best bet for picking up some Lumpy’s is auditing a meal at Stony Brook University.

Lumpy’s is parked in Stony Brook’s Union Plaza (Toll Drive) on Monday-Thursday from 11am-5pm and on Friday from 11am-3pm.

When not feeding Stony Brook’s finest, Lumpy’s can sometimes be found at Blue Point Brewery in Patchogue or cruising around the Bay Shore/Islip area.

If Lumpy’s primary hindrance to unfamiliar customers is its transience of location, the primary hindrance to writing a review is the transience of the menu, although that usually proves to be one of those good problems.

There are some static options, but Lumpy’s is not afraid to switch things up. For instance, right now (probably) vegetarians can enjoy Madras Lentil Tacos with Sriracha, sour cream, cheddar, salsa and lettuce or Falafel Tacos- chickpea patties with tzatziki sauce, hummus and lettuce.

However, Lumpy’s has previously offered Veggie Samosa tacos and Beet Sliders for the meat-disinclined to rave reviews. Of course, many of their not-currently-on-the-menu items have been known to cycle back through.

For those unopposed to fauna with their flora the Grilled Steak, Buffalo Chicken and Spicy Pulled Pork tacos are all pretty sure-fire hits.

If you find Lumpy’s before you’ve had the most important meal of the day, breaking the fast with the Chorizo-‘n-Egg Tacos (including cheddar, salsa and sour cream- yeah it’s really good) is an excellent way to get things started.

Lumpy’s is perhaps best known for its sliders. There’s not too much I can say about those that isn’t covered by: they’re delicious; I can’t think of a better slider I’ve had in any restaurant, regardless of its mobility. The Black Angus is a sure thing for fans of the slider subgenre.

Should you take advantage of a Lumpy’s entrée, include a side of Aioli Yucca Fries with Chipotle Aioli or Fried Plantains with Honey Garlic Sauce. They’re as good as they sound.
