Did We Enjoy This Bourgeois Pig Sandwich At The Steel Cart?

Ever had a Bourgeois Pig Sandwich? Well, as you can see in the video above – in Chicago it’s regarded as one of the best sandwiches in town.

As we told you recently, there’s a new food cart splitting its time between Dumbo and Hudson Square called The Steel Cart.

The menu looked interesting, and we could not pass up something called a Bourgeois Pig, which costs $8.

You can add a mini-soup to any sandwich for $3.50, but we were splitting a soup and Bourgeois Pig Sandwich with someone else, so we got the full-size Vegetable Barley Soup for $6.

It took a few minutes to get the food, as everything is prepared while you wait, even slaughtering the pig (obviously kidding here).

We had some time to speak with Luke, the chef and founder, who was quite knowledgeable about street food in other cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. Good conversation while he was preparing the food.

The Bourgeois Pig Sandwich was made with honey ham, brie cheese and baked pears. It’s no wonder that pig was bourgeois. No self-respecting peasant would be caught dead eating brie cheese and baked pears.

We’re not a peasant (and aren’t so hot on the self-respecting part either), so we loved this Bourgeois Pig Sandwich. Ham was the main flavor, but the brie and pear were a big part of each bite too. Excellent combination of ingredients.

You could see a lot of vegetables and barley in the soup, but it was on the bland side. We added a little salt, and all the flavors that were not apparent at first came out. A pinch of salt turned this into a delicious, healthy soup.

The Steel Cart splits its time between 70 Jay St in Dumbo and the NW corner of Varick & Vandam in Manhattan. We asked Luke if they would be going to midtown and other areas, and he said they probably would be at some point.
