Tasting Chicken Tinga and Other Tacos at Mexico Blvd

One of the better new trucks this year has been Mexico Blvd.  They have only been around for a couple of months, but have built a good following with their strong, vibrant flavors.

While the torta we had early on was good (and messy), ordering tacos gives you the full range of their abilities.

We got types of tacos – al pastor, chicken tinga and bistec, which were $3 each.

A couple of things have changed since they first started.  Tacos were originally served with only one tortilla each, but now they use two for each taco.  Good move!

Jordi also told me they are testing out a new hot sauce that he said is really hot.  Did I want to try it?  Of course!

Each of the tacos was topped with onions and cilantro, but that’s where the similarities ended.

I started with the al pastor taco, which was marinated in a 3-chili sauce.  It was topped with a long slice of pineapple, scallions and  that new hot sauce.  Between the 3-chili sauce and the hot sauce, the al pastor had quite a “pop”.  The pineapple added a little fruitiness and tang, but make no mistake, this was SPICY.  If you leave off the hot sauce, it will still have some heat, but much less so.  Personally, I loved it with the hot sauce.

The chicken tinga had shredded chicken breast and another spicy salsa, in addition to the hot sauce.  I also tasted fresh lime juice.  Between the chicken, lime and salsa, I had to be careful not to let the juices drip on my shirt, but that was not going to keep me from fully enjoying this taco.

The Bistec taco was made with chunks of top round beef that were marinated in beer.  Jordi told me the beer marinade helps the chilis get into the beef.  One thing’s for sure, the beef was nice and tender, and I didn’t run across any fat.  The beef also had a nice grilled flavor, more so than the other meats, and it was topped with a medium-spicy red salsa, onions and fresh cilantro.

This was a great lunch, but I was stuffed.  Two tacos should be enough for most people for lunch, but I had to try a few different tacos to give you the scoop.

If you’re a vegetarian, Mexico Blvd also serves a nice guacamole with chili-rubbed chips, and a vegetarian quesadilla with avocado and cheese.

Mexico Blvd makes the rounds of various neighborhoods for lunch, so follow them on twitter here or on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed.
