When a bunch of food trucks started coming back at the beginning of April, Blend Express was nowhere to be found. We weren’t sure if they were coming back this spring, but last week, Blend was right back on the scene.

Looking at the menu, there have been some changes in the off season.  Now the menu is even more similar to a lot of other vendors: pick your vehicle (tacos, burrito or rice bowl), filler (beef, pork, chicken, veggies), toppings and sauce.

Since at least half a dozen other food trucks follow this formula, where the vendors have to distinguish themselves is in the cuisine. Also, at Blend Express, the prices are about $1 less, with 3 tacos for $6 instead of $7 (or more).

The first thing Blend gets right is the use of 2 tortillas per taco. That makes it a helluva lot easier to eat.

The fillings were pretty good. The shredded chicken had a nice little kick. The veggie taco had a bunch of squash, zucchini and mushrooms. Squash and zucchini are not usually two of our favorite veggies, but we enjoyed this taco a lot. The veggies still had plenty of juiciness and body.

The pork taco was a little fatty, but still tasted pretty good with all the toppings.

Speaking of toppings, this is where we feel Blend distinguish themselves. The red cabbage was good, but even better was the pickled pineapple, radish and cucumber salsa (above, top center). There were also scallions, cilantro, corn and salsa available, with a healthy dose of cotija cheese sprinkled on top.

Honorable mention should be given to the sauces. We had chipotle sauce, hot sauce and crema. The chiptole sauce was thick and rich, and the hot sauce brought the heat. Nice job!

You can find Blend Express on twitter here or on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed. And if you are a little low on cash, they even have an ATM machine built into the back of the truck. Now you know what they mean by cash and carry.
