Ever had Caribbean style’d Fish and Chips? Well, we needed to be by Madison Square Park yesterday around lunch, and wouldn’t you know it, Fishing Shrimp was parked nearby.
Regular NYSF readers know how much we like fish and shrimp, and the only thing better than fish and shrimp is…FRIED fish and shrimp!
We were hoping to try their cod, which we haven’t had a chance to taste yet, but alas, they only had whiting yesterday. Cod is a winter fish and in season, but no luck.
However, we did have a little bit of luck, in that the chef, Odeis, told us he just created a new cocktail sauce and wanted us to try it. He tossed a few fried shrimp and the new cocktail sauce into the bag for us.
Of course the first thing we tried was the shrimp. We would eat shrimp every day if possible, but a) we have to try all the menu items so we can report back to you, and b) we don’t have the pocketbook for it.
The shrimp here aren’t huge, but they are plump and juicy, and a good 2-3 bites each.
Dipping a shrimp in the new cocktail sauce, we were impressed. The cocktail sauce was vibrant, with a nice bite from the horseradish, but it didn’t overpower the shrimp.
It wasn’t too ketchup-y, which can sometimes be a problem, and you could taste just a touch of lemon juice. Good job on the new cocktail sauce Odeis.
The fish and chips at Fishing Shrimp is more of the Caribbean style than British. It has a lighter batter, which is seasoned with black pepper and other herbs.
We almost forgot, you can get a small order for $7 or a large order for $12. Guess which one we got?
The fish was thin fillets of whiting, which is battered and cooked with the skin still on one side. The fillets are too thin to remove the skin without destroying the fish. The skin adds a somewhat stronger fish taste than you would get from a fish like cod.
In the early days of Fishing Shrimp, the fries were kind of wimpy. They seem to have improved. The fries were crispier than the last few times, and had a nice taste.
Once again, these are not British-style “chips”. They are thinner and more well done, which we prefer.
Odeis was telling me that Fishing Shrimp had some mechanical problems when the weather was really cold, but things were back to normal now.
You can find the Fishing Shrimp truck on twitter here or on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed. We haven’t tried the cod yet, but the fried shrimp is probably our favorite dish so far.
