Perry’s Review: Red, White & Blue (and Dessert) from Yankee Doodle Dandy

Yankee Doodle Dandy is a relatively new food truck that first appeared on the NYC streets in the dead of winter. We had a NYSF First Look on a cold, cold February day. We got to go back in the nice weather for a second visit.

True to our predilection for buffalo chicken, we ordered the Red, White & Blue, their name for buffalo chicken tenders, which cost $7.50.

The owner, Josh, was a pretty good salesman, and he persuaded us to try the chocolate pudding pie for dessert for $3.50.

If you’re interested in the story behind Yankee Doodle Dandy, or food trucks in general, Josh did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) about 2 months ago. After telling his story, people asked Josh all kinds of questions, such as how to go about opening a food truck, which he helpfully answered.

The Red, White & Blue includes chicken fingers, “Texas toast”, blue cheese dressing and your choice of fries or a salad. For once in our life, we chose the salad.

We couldn’t tell exactly how many chicken tenders there were because the chicken was cut into pieces, but there was plenty…and they were real chicken tenders, not processed junk.

The breading was soaked in “firecracker sauce”, which wasn’t that hot, but did add some zing.

It was nice having a cool, crisp salad instead of fries. Iceberg lettuce, large tomato wedges and shredded cheese were better than most of the street salads you run across.

“Texas toast” was basically buttered toast, which was kind of redundant with breaded chicken as the main course.

Ending the meal with chocolate pudding pie was a nice treat. Graham cracker crust is one of our favorites, and they put a bunch on top of the slice, too. Creamy chocolate pudding and whipped cream completed the dessert.

This was a very enjoyable lunch from Yankee Doodle Dandy. You can enjoy one too by following them on twitter here or on the Mobile Munchies twitter feed.
