STREET EATS: SCARFACE SANDWICH FROM THE WORLD’S BEST SANDWICH TRUCK

March 6th, 2012

I bet you didn’t know we had the World’s Best Sandwich Truck (WBST) right here in NYC!  (At least, that’s what the side of the truck says.)

The WBST does not travel around the city, it parks in the same place every day – 20th St between Broadway and Park Ave.  They are basically a deli on wheels, with assorted hot and cold sandwiches, but they use Boar’s Head meat and are priced below most delis.  They also have specialty sandwich combinations, which is what I usually get.

I never tried the Scarface, which cost $5.75, so that was my choice for lunch.

TODAY’S LUNCH: SPANISH SUB FROM THE WORLD’S BEST SANDWICH TRUCK

About 3 months ago when I was at the World’s Best Sandwich truck (20th St between Broadway & Park Ave), I was almost tempted at the last minute by the Spanish Sub, but went with my original choice, chicken salad on a roll.  It was decent, but I should have listened to my heart!

Today when I went there, the Daily Special was a Spanish Sub (chicken cutlet, mozzarella, avocado, jalapeno, tomato, oil & vinegar for $6), so it was no contest what Today’s Lunch was.  Click through to see if it was as good as it sounded.

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHICKEN SALAD ON A ROLL FROM WORLD’S BEST SANDWICH TRUCK

truck from back

When people talk about the World’s Best Sandwich truck on 20th St between Broadway and Park Ave, they often mention the chicken salad sandwich.  Last time I went there, the intention was to try the chicken salad sandwich, but I was seduced by an Italian Sub at the last minute.

That almost happened again today.  The Daily Special was a Spanish Sub (chicken cutlet, mozzarella, avocado, jalapeno, oil & vinegar) which looked really good.

But I snapped out of it.  Today’s Lunch is chicken salad on a roll ($4) from the World’s Best Sandwich truck.

TODAY’S LUNCH: ITALIAN SUB FROM THE WORLD’S BEST SANDWICH TRUCK

One of the things I miss the most by eating street food every day for lunch (other than a view of my toes) is just a plain old sandwich.  I’ve always loved cold cuts, which you don’t see sold too often on the street.  So I was happy to read about the The Worlds Best Sandwich Truck in the recent New York Magazine article about their favorite NYC food trucks.

I went down to 20th St between Broadway & Park Ave, ordered an Italian Sub ($5), and spoke with some people who had just ordered.  Everyone raved about this truck, especially the chicken salad and tuna salad sandwiches.  I had already ordered an Italian Sub for Today’s Lunch, but will keep those in mind for future reference.

When a food truck calls itself The World’s Greatest Sandwich Truck, that’s setting the bar pretty high.  Would the Italian Sub live up to the hype?  Find out after the jump.
