STREET EATS: CHILI CON CORNE FROM WAFELS & DINGES

January 27th, 2012

If you’ve been to Wafels & Dinges (and we know you have),  you know they have amazing wafels.  We personally can attest to this after first eating one at the 2009 Vendy Awards, where they won Best Dessert.  We’ve had many, many more since then.

Did you know you can also get a delicious lunch at W&D?

For a long time, W&D has served pulled pork on a wafel, which makes a very good lunch, but they upped the ante by creating another lunch dish – Chili con Corne, a play on chili con carne.

Unlike the pulled pork, this is not served on one of their regular wafels.  The culinary wizards at W&D created a cornbread wafel on which to put the chili – hence chili con corne.

You can get chili con corne with either beef or vegetarian chili.  Both cost $7.  I’m a big carnivore, so I got the beef chili.

There were some tender beef chunks in the chili along with the beans, although I can always go for more meat.  There was a decent amount of cumin in the chili, and it was a little spicy too.  It was all topped with shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream.

What makes this dish really work is the cornbread wafel.  Cornbread and chili are a great pairing, and the chili would have clashed with one of their regular Brussels or Liege wafels, which would have been too sweet.

One thing you should know is the Chili con Corne is only available at the Wafels & Dinges truck.  The carts are not large enough to serve either of the savory wafels.  Don’t worry, you can find the truck on twitter here or on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed here.

And if you want to know how to pronounce dinges (which means “stuff”), check out the video below, and listen to the young kid in the bike helmet.

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHILI CON CORNE (YES, CORNE) FROM WAFELS & DINGES

I knew right away what Today’s Lunch would be when I saw this tweet from Wafels & Dinges: “As promised. Corn wafel w chili, topped w cheddar, cilantro and sour cream. Through the end of the week and then gone.”

I love cornbread, and a cornbread wafel with chili, cheese and sour cream was something I just had to try.

Today’s Lunch is Chili Con Corne (their name, not mine) from Wafels & Dinges.  It cost $7.

E.L.F. (EVERYBODY LIKES FREE): FREE KORILLA BBQ AND WAFELS & DINGES VIA TENKA

January 6th, 2011

tenka

Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch (and dessert)?

Tenka, the mobile daily deal site where you don’t have to buy anything, currently has live deals with Korilla BBQ and Wafels & Dinges.

You can get a free burrito from Korilla BBQ, then go over to Wafels & Dinges for a free wafel & dinges.  All you have to do is go up to the truck with your mobile phone to redeem it.

The Tenka mobile app can currently be used with iPhones, Blackberries and Android phones. And you can even authenticate who you are via Facebook Connect if that makes you more comfortable.

Click here for the free Korilla burrito and here for the free Wafel & Dinges.  Last we checked, there were only 59 burritos and 30 wafels left, so hurry!

You can follow Tenka on Twitter here for more daily deals.  A little birdie tells us there will also be more Tenka NY food truck deals towards the end of January.

Doesn’t that wafel look great?

CELEBRATE NATIONAL WAFFLE DAY TODAY

August 24th, 2010

truck used

Today is National Waffle Day and Wafels & Dinges is the obvious place to celebrate.  They will be on 52nd St between Lexington & 3rd Ave, and if you give them a drawing of their truck, you get a free waffle.  They will be decorating the truck with drawings of the truck, like some kind of zen puzzle.

Between 1pm and 2 pm, they will be crowning Miss Wafel and Mister Wafel 2010 , who each get a year of free wafels.  We hope there’s not a costume or uniform because there’s no way Miss Wafel or Mister Wafel will still fit into it after eating free wafels for a year.  We certainly wouldn’t be able to.

If you recall, Wafels & Dinges won the 2009 Vendy Award for Best Dessert (below), so treat yourself to a wafel today and enjoy the festivities at the same time.

SPEKULOOS – OUR FAVORITE NEW TOPPING

July 14th, 2010

spekuloos 1

Nice feature in today’s NY Times about the favorite new topping in our house – spekuloos from the Wafels & Dinges truck.  We picked up a jar less than 2 weeks ago…and it’s almost gone already :(

We do have a little disagreement on the taste though.  The label on the jar and the NY Times article say it’s made with gingerbread cookies, but it tastes more like graham crackers to us.  If it’s made with Belgian gingerbread cookies, they seem to be different from Dutch gingerbread cookies.

We were in Amsterdam in December 2008 for Sinterklaas, and the gingerbread cookies we had were a much darker brown with a significantly more pronounced ginger taste.  Personally, we like spekuloos better than the Dutch gingerbread we had in Amsterdam, but perhaps it was just a regional variation.  Either way, we’ll be back at the truck soon for some more.

Please sir, can we have some more?
