TODAY’S LUNCH: CHICKEN OVER RICE FROM SAMMY’S HALAL

September 7th, 2010
Queens cart

Sammy (in black coat) at the Queens cart

I’ve walked by Sammy’s Halal cart on the NE corner of 6th Ave and West 4th St in Greenwich Village a few times.  Sammy’s Halal won the 2nd Vendy Award in 2006 for his cart on Broadway and 73rd St in Jackson Heights, Queens.  Since then, Sammy has expanded with additional carts on East 4th St near Broadway in the East Village and the one I went to in the West Village.  It’s tough to miss the giant picture of the Vendy Award on the side of the cart.

How has the food changed since Sammy’s won the Vendy Award in 2006?  I didn’t try it back then, but I can tell you how it is now.  Today’s Lunch is chicken over rice from Sammy’s Halal ($5).

TODAY’S LUNCH: FISH & DUMPLINGS FROM THE TRIN-PAKI BOYS CART

September 2nd, 2010

cart

I stopped by 43rd St & 6th Ave to talk to Rosa, the Vendy finalist from El Rey Del Sabor.  She wasn’t there, but the trip was still worthwhile.

Right next door, I noticed the Trini-Paki Boys cart had fish, dumplings & sweet potato listed  as one of their Daily Specials.  I really like fish and don’t get it often at home, so I try to get it outside the house whenever possible – and Trini-Paki Boys is one of the fresher, more interesting carts around.

Today’s Lunch is the fish special ($7) from Trini-Paki Boys cart.

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHICKEN SALAD ON A ROLL FROM WORLD’S BEST SANDWICH TRUCK

August 31st, 2010

truck from back

When people talk about the World’s Best Sandwich truck on 20th St between Broadway and Park Ave, they often mention the chicken salad sandwich.  Last time I went there, the intention was to try the chicken salad sandwich, but I was seduced by an Italian Sub at the last minute.

That almost happened again today.  The Daily Special was a Spanish Sub (chicken cutlet, mozzarella, avocado, jalapeno, oil & vinegar) which looked really good.

But I snapped out of it.  Today’s Lunch is chicken salad on a roll ($4) from the World’s Best Sandwich truck.

TODAY’S LUNCH: TACOS FROM THE EGGS TRAVAGANZA CART

August 30th, 2010

new sign 1

A really enjoyed the Mexican wrap that I had a couple of months ago from the Eggs Travaganza cart on the NE corner of 52nd St & Park Ave.  They always have great breakfasts, and at the time, they had just started serving lunch.  The Mexican wrap was an egg sandwich stuffed with chorizo, potatoes and cheese. Yum!

They had new signs up on the back and side of the cart, and they even listed us as a reference.  That is true – we do recommend Eggs Travaganza as a NYSF Suggested Vendor.

I knew they had expanded the lunch menu to include tacos and burritos, but haven’t had a chance to try them yet.  Today’s Lunch is a carne asada taco and a chicken taco ($2.50 each).  How would it compare to other tacos I’ve had.  Click through to find out – but here’s a picture to whet your appetite.

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHICKEN KATI ROLLS FROM THE NEW “MY BIRYANI” CART

August 27th, 2010

cart back

There’s a new biryani cart in town, My Biryani, but they’re taking on a legend.  The Biryani Cart on 46th St & 6th Ave has won the People’s Choice Award at the past 2 Vendy Awards, and show no signs of slowing down.

My Biryani is only 2 blocks south of Biryani Cart, on the SW corner of 44th St & 6th Ave.  Today’s Lunch is 2 chicken kati rolls ($6 or $3.50 each) from My Biryani.  How would the upstart newcomer measure up?  Find out after the jump.
