NYSF FIRST LOOK: RED HOOK LOBSTER POUND TRUCK

May 13th, 2011

Yesterday was the debut of the Red Hook Lobster Pound Truck (dubbed Big Red), and we were there to check it out.

We got there around 12:45 and the line was about 15 people long, but it moved very quickly.  I had a lobster roll in my hand in less than 15 minutes.

The toughest part was deciding between a Maine lobster roll or a Connecticut lobster roll.  I went for the classic Maine.

RED HOOK LOBSTER TRUCK OPENING TODAY

May 11th, 2011

Part II of Lobster Roll Week kicks off today with the Red Hook Lobster Truck debuting their new truck, dubbed Big Red by their contest winner, Dan Hosoya.

Susan tells us the truck will be around 26th St & Park Ave on Thurs and Hudson & King on Fri.  They hope to be in place and serving by 11am, so get there early to avoid long lines.

We would also recommend checking their twitter account here before heading over, just to be sure.  You never know when a parking spot will be unavailable because of a movie shoot, an emergency, or if the police decide to hassle a truck.

We haven’t tried a lobster roll yet, but we had a shrimp roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound at Choice Eats, and it was amazing!

IT’S LOBSTER ROLL WEEK AT NEW YORK STREET FOOD!

May 9th, 2011

All you lobster roll lovers are in for a treat this week!

Luke’s Lobster truck will be on the New York streets starting TODAY, after debuting at the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market yesterday.  Their new truck, dubbed Nauti (as in nautical), will be roaming the NYC streets.  You can check their twitter locations here.

And on Thursday, the Red Hook Lobster Pound truck will also debut on the New York streets.  They already have a truck in Washington DC, and are now opening a second truck on their home turf.

Susan from RHLP has been in touch with us, and said she will send us their location Thurs morning.  She doesn’t want to give out their location yet because she doesn’t want another truck to take the spot. Hmmm, wonder where that is?  We will let you know Thursday morning after Susan contacts us, and you can follow them on twitter here.

Looks like this will be a great week for lobster lovers (and every week after).

NYC FOOD TRUCK NEWS

March 2nd, 2011

A few interesting news items on the food truck front.

Fork In The Road reports the Red Hook Lobster Pound is having a third truck built, the Rollin Lobster Love Shack, but it will be their first one in New York.  We told you about their first two trucks running up and down I-95, selling their extremely popular lobster rolls in Washington DC.  Glad to hear they will be giving the home town folks some love too, although they don’t expect to be up and running until May.

However, with the recent NYC ruling against Paty’s Taco Truck, the Red Hook Lobster Pound say they may only be in one spot for an hour or so at a time.  The best way to find them is on twitter @lobstertruckny or @redhooklobster.

They also caught up with the Milk Truck, who sell delicious grilled cheese sammies at the Brooklyn Flea, and are getting a truck too.

LOBSTERS ON I-95?

May 25th, 2010

We wanted to let you know about two items of interest to Washington DC street foodies.

Have you ever seen lobsters traveling down I-95?  You soon will.

The Red Hook Lobster Pound in Brooklyn wanted to expand by putting a food truck on the streets of New York, but the lack of new permits being granted by the city forced one of the owners to reach out to her cousin, a tech and communications lawyer in Washington DC.

He helped them get the necessary permits, and the Red Hook Lobster Pound expects to have a truck in DC selling Maine-style (chilled lobster with mayo) and Connecticut-style (warm, with butter) lobster rolls by the end of June.  Hard to believe, but in the food truck permit arena, Washington’s bureaucracy was better than New York’s.  [DC Street Vendor]

sweetbites truck

In the 2nd Washington DC item – Some people say baking is more science than art.  At the new sweetbites truck, it certainly is.  Sandra Panetta recently quit her job as a biochemist at the EPA in order to turn her part-time dessert catering business into a full-time business.  By all accounts, it’s going quite well. [Washington City Paper]

Certainly beats sitting in 4 hour government budget meetings.  Gotta love that sucrose!
