The Red Hook Lobster Pound, like many other businesses in the area, got wiped out by Hurricane Sandy. Not only were most of the restaurant and supplies damaged, but Big Red (their food truck) was put out of commission permanently.

Most of the Red Hook businesses have decided to rebuild, and in their case, also buy a new truck.

Friday was their first day back with the new Big Red, and we caught up to them on 49th St between 6th & 7th Ave, where a line of about 12-15 people were ahead of us.

We’ve already had most of the items on the menu, but wanted to welcome them back and say hello to Susan, one of the owners who was working the line.

Upon looking at the menu, we realized the Tuscan Lobster Roll was never reviewed on NYSF, so that gave us something new to try. It cost $16.

Red Hook Lobster Pound & Truck Rebuilding After Sandy

November 14th, 2012

Damage at the Red Hook Lobster Pound

We know there has been a lot of coverage on NYSF about Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. We apologize if you’re starting to feel Sandy overload, but  these are our friends and neighbors who were affected. We were one of the lucky ones, with only no power to deal with for 4 days. We still have our home and job.

Unfortunately, that is not the case with a lot of others. As you all know, our beloved food trucks have been out every day feeding those most devastated by the storm, but one food truck is not able to.

Along with most of Red Hook, our friends at Red Hook Lobster Pound suffered extensive damage and losses from the storm. Not only was The Pound and their commissary flooded with over 4 feet of water, losing all their tanks and inventory, but their food truck, Big Red, needs to be totally rebuilt.

Street Eats: Connecticut-Style Lobster Roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound

August 7th, 2012

(credit: NYSF)

The Red Hook Lobster Pound has come up with some creative ways to serve lobster, such as the lobster BLT and lobster mac & cheese. But sometimes you just want a classic lobster roll.

Even then, you still have a decision to make, Maine or Connecticut style? Maine style is cold and the lobster is mixed with lemon-tinged mayo. Connecticut style is warm and the lobster is poached in butter. Tough choice, but I’m going with warm butter over cold mayo today. Next time, who knows?

Red Hook’s lobster rolls are $16, which is more than I usually spend for lunch. Is it worth the extra lunch money? Click through to find out.

FREE Lobster Rolls Today for Nat’l Lobster Day from Big Red & Sam Adams

June 15th, 2012

(credit: NYSF)

Did you know that today is National Lobster Day? The Red Hook Lobster Pound’s truck (aka “Big Red”) and Samuel Adams are teaming up to pair these two delicious staples of summer, lobster and beer.

Samuel Adams Chef Partner David Burke has created a Summer Ale-infused lobster roll recipe. Whether pairing or cooking with craft beer, Samuel Adams Summer Ale’s crisp wheat character and built-in spice packet of lemon zest and Grains of Paradise complement the buttery, sweet lobster.

Grains of Paradise is a cardamom-like pepper from Africa, first used as a brewing spice in the 13th Century and rumored to have aphrodisiac properties. This peppery taste cuts through the richness of the lobster meat and balances its sweet flavors while also adding a distinct yet subtle depth to the citrus and wheat tastes of the brew.

Click through for further details of how you can get a FREE Summer Ale-infused lobster roll, as well as a recipe for you to make your own at home.
