Street Eats: Fettucine Alfredo & Dessert from Now Eat This!

We hadn’t seen Rocco DiSpirito’s Now Eat This! truck around for a while. Was this another example of a food truck that went under?

No, they were just on hiatus for a while at the end of the summer. The truck recently reappeared with a new menu…and higher prices. No main dishes are under $10 anymore.

When it comes to Italian food, we prefer Northern Italian cream sauces to Southern Italian tomato sauces, so when we saw fettucine alfredo on the menu for $10, the choice was easy.

On another day, we stopped by the Now Eat This! truck on the late side for lunch. They were already out of food, but still had a few desserts left. They handed us a free dessert and asked us to come back again for lunch. Who are we to turn down a free dessert?

Street Eats: Chicken Satay & Vanilla Panna Cotta from Now Eat This!

If you’re interested in eating a healthy lunch from a food truck, Now Eat This!is a good option.  All menu items are supposed to be under 350 calories, and are based on recipes from a cookbook of the same name by Rocco Di Spirito.

Similar to his UK colleague Jamie Oliver, Rocco is on a mssion to teach people, especially children, how to cook and eat healthily.  One of the first things they teach is that food can be delicious and healthy – these two things are not mutually exclusive.

I’ve tried a few things from the Now Eat This! truck since it first came out last November, ranging from excellent (chicken broccoli stir fry) to ok (lasagna bolognese).

With a few new items on the menu, it was time for a return trip for the chicken satay ($9) and vanilla panna cotta with a caramel sauce ($3) for dessert.

STREET EATS: LASAGNA BOLOGNESE FROM NOW EAT THIS!

February 28th, 2012

Now Eat This! is a food truck with a mission – actually a few missions.  It was founded by celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito last November in conjunction with the release of his cookbook of the same name, which has 150 recipes for America’s favorite comfort foods, and all dishes are under 350 calories.

Mission #1 is to teach America how to eat healthy by (mission #2) buying his book and using these recipes.  But before you think this is just another celebrity cookbook,  there’s a great twist in mission #3 – 100% of the proceeds from food truck sales go to teaching New York City schoolchildren about healthy cooking and eating on Free Lunch Fridays.

Now Eat This! operates Mon-Thurs for the general public, and every Friday, the truck goes to a different school in the New York city area and gives free lunches to the kids, teaching them how to cook and eat healthier in the process.  Now that’s a mission worth supporting!

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHICKEN BROCCOLI STIR-FRY FROM NOW EAT THIS!

November 21st, 2011

Last week we told you about the new food truck from Rocco DiSpirito called Now Eat This!  While there’s a tie-in to his new book with 150 healthy comfort food recipes, there’s also a non-profit educational component that well worthwhile to support.

The Now Eat This! truck operates from Mon-Thurs from 11:30am-3pm. On Fridays, they use 100% of the proceeds from that week’s sales to feed and educate children in the New York area about healthy eating and cooking.  So far they have gone to two schools over the past two weeks, and tomorrow they will be going to another New York area school.

Rocco was in the truck taking orders and bagging, and I asked him how long the truck was going to be on the street.  Food trucks tied in with a product are usually only out for a limited period of time, but Rocco told me the truck was permanent.

Honestly, that didn’t surprise us at all because last month we told you that Rocco bought his truck from the Marrakech Chefs guys.  Based on the lunch we had last week, Mama’s meatballs, the Now Eat This! truck is a welcome addition to the New York Street Food scene.

At first I was going to have the enchiladas for Today’s Lunch, but changed my mind at the last minute to the chicken broccoli stir-fry ($5) after seeing (and smelling) it cooking in the truck.

NYSF FIRST LOOK: NOW EAT THIS! TRUCK FROM ROCCO DISPIRITO

November 9th, 2011

As we told you last week, Rocco DiSpirito has a new food truck on the street called Now Eat This!  It’s also the name of his new cookbook, with recipes for 150 of America’s favorite comfort foods, with all dishes under 350 calories.

But before you click away thinking this is just another celebrity cookbook,  there’s a great twist to this story – 100% of the proceeds from food truck sales go to teaching and feeding New York City schoolchildren on Free Lunch Fridays.

Last week, Rocco and the Now Eat This! truck taught the kids at the Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy in the Bronx about healthy eating – and served them a healthy, tasty lunch of under 350 calories.  This Friday, they will be going to another school.

At the truck yesterday, they had chicken noodle soup, Mama’s meatballs & pasta, cheesy turkey enchiladas and brownie cupcakes.  You can see the full menu here, including nutritional information and prices.

I went for Mama’s meatballs and pasta ($5) and a cupcake brownie ($2).  Did I mention much of the menu is fat free, gluten free and/or sugar free?
