STREET EATS: FRIED SHRIMP PLATTER FROM KIM’S AUNT KITCHEN

One of the long-time street vendors in midtown is Kim’s Aunt Kitchen. They are located on West 46th St just east of 6th Ave, next to Moshe’s Falafel (although Moshe’s is closed this week for Passover).  You can easily spot Kim’s by the slogan “Food Is Love” on the side of their cart and on the cart”s menu.  We couldn’t agree more!

One food we love is fried seafood, which Kim’s Aunt Kitchen has in spades, and at street food prices.  I know what you’re thinking, that cheap seafood is not the smartest thing to get from a street cart – but in this case you would be mistaken.  I have eaten Kim’s fried seafood numerous times, and they have a steady line of regulars at lunch every day.  I’m not aware of any health problems, other than of the cholesterol variety.

On this visit, I got the fried shrimp platter, which includes 8 pieces for $6.50.

TODAY’S LUNCH: FRIED FLOUNDER PLATTER FROM KIM’S AUNT KITCHEN

June 22nd, 2011

After enjoying the fish encebollado yesterday from El Guayaquileno, I had a craving for fried fish.  Kim’s Aunt Kitchen on 46th St between 6th & 5th Ave is one of my go-to places for fried fish sandwiches and platters.

Today’s Lunch is a fried flounder platter ($6.50), but they also have flounder sandwiches for $5.

The recent NYSF Guest Post from Charlotte of Simonseeks.com entitled “An English Girl’s Take On The Best NYC Mobile Eats” gave me a hankering for fried fish from Kim’s Aunt Kitchen. They are on 46th St just east of 6th Ave with a big “Food Is Love” sign on the right side of the cart.

It feels like forever since I’ve been there (last February), so Today’s Lunch is a fried whiting sandwich ($4) and french fries ($1.50) from Kim’s Aunt Kitchen.

TODAY’S LUNCH: BULGOKI OVER FRIED RICE FROM KIM’S AUNT KITCHEN

When I went to Kim’s Aunt Kitchen cart a few months ago on West 46th St, just east of 6th Ave (bet 6th & 5th Aves), it was for the fried flounder & shrimp combo, which was pretty good.  Knowing their Korean origins, it was time to try the bulgoki (aka bulgogi), a thinly-sliced beef bbq dish that is one of the better-known Korean dishes.

Today’s Lunch is the beef bulgoki over fried rice with bbq sauce ($6.50 for large, $4.75 for small).  You can also get it over white rice or lo mein, and they have the usual white sauce, hot sauce, ketchup options, which made no sense with bulgoki. (more…)

TODAY’S LUNCH: FRIED FISH & SHRIMP PLATTER FROM KIM’S AUNT KITCHEN

February 9th, 2010

Cart side name

Today’s Lunch is a combo platter from the Kim’s Aunt Kitchen food cart on the south side of West 46th St, just east of 6th Ave (bet 6th & 5th Aves).  One side of the cart said Kim’s Aunt Kitchen and the other side of the cart had a big sign that said Food Is Love, which it also said on the menu board.  We couldn’t agree more!

The combo platter gives you the choice of any 2 offerings, which include grilled chicken, beef bulgogi, whiting, flounder and shrimp – plus rice, fries or lo mein, and a salad.  Pretty good meal for $7.50.  I chose the shrimp and flounder, with tartar sauce and hot sauce, and there was plenty of both – 5 pieces of shrimp and 2 pieces of flounder.  The shrimp was heavily breaded, but decent-sized.  If you get the shrimp (only) platter, it comes with 8 pieces for $6.

The flounder had a lighter breading than the shrimp, and was the better choice in my opinion.  The fried flounder sandwich was only $4.50, which is an excellent choice for future reference.

The rice was good, and there was a lot of it.  It was more like an Asian fried rice (without extra ingredients) than the Middle Eastern rice served on the halal carts.  There was way more rice than I could finish.  The salad was plain lettuce (I asked for no tomato), and since I didn’t ask for a dressing, they didn’t put one on.  That was my mistake, but after the fried fish and rice, plain lettuce was fine.

Today’s Lunch was very good.  I’ll be returning to Kim’s Aunt Kitchen, and next time I want to try the bulgogi or grilled chicken, which both looked really good when I was waiting for the fish.
