Walking down 7th Ave yesterday, we saw the Jamaican Dutchy cart in its old spot on 51st St just east of 7th Ave.

What’s going on? Were we accidentally transported back in time to 2010?

Street Eats: Fried Chicken from Jamaican Dutchy, 2009 Vendy Cup Finalist

We were in the Grand Central area recently for lunch, and for some reason, had a hankering for fried chicken. You may wonder where to get fried chicken on the street, but we know a few places, such as Okadaman and Jerk Pan.

This time we went to the Jamaican Dutchy, the 2009 Vendy Cup Finalist who parks on 43rd St & 3rd Ave every day. While their side dishes may be Jamaican, the fried chicken is fairly similar to the Southern fried chicken we all know and love.

The Dutchy has a $5 fried chicken meal that you can get with white or dark meat. The choices are either 1 breast and 2 wings or 1 thigh and 2 legs. We opted for the breast and wings. If you wanted it mixed up, they would probably do that for you too. In fact, we ended up with a mixed platter, even though we didn’t order it.

We usually focus on the huge variety and quality of street food lunches, but if you want to start your day right, there are great breakfasts available too.

We tried 3 different breakfasts last week featuring 3 totally different cuisines: Jamaican, Japanese and Mexican…and they were all within 10 blocks of each other in midtown.

Street Eats: Jerk Chicken Wrap & Black Cake from Jamaican Dutchy

We first ran across the Jamaican Dutchy cart at the 2009 Vendy Awards, where they were finalists in the main category.  Although they didn’t win, we found out they were located only 6 blocks from our office, and started going there on a regular basis.

Last summer the owner, O’Neill Reid, traded in his cart for a brand new food truck.  O’Neill told us the truck was larger and gave him more options in menu items, but unfortunately, it also coincided with the police chasing food trucks away from certain areas.

We lost touch with the Jamaican Dutchy for a while, but last week they tweeted they were now serving $5 wraps.  O’Neill doesn’t tweet much, but he told us the truck was parking daily by the SE corner of 43rd St & 3rd Ave.  Time to head crosstown to see an old friend…and check out his new wraps.

In addition to the regular menu, you can get wraps with jerk chicken, curry chicken, stew chicken or roast veggies.  I went for the classic jerk chicken.  They also had a dessert special of black cake for $3.  I’ve never had it before, so I ordered a slice to check it out.

Jamaican Dutchy Now Serving $5 Wraps

May 24th, 2012

O’Neill Reid, the man behind Jamaican Dutchy, just announced they will be serving $5 wraps at the truck.  That’s good news for people who don’t want the enormous portions that Jamaican Dutchy’s usually serves.

The Jamaican Dutchy’s main dishes like stew chicken, curry chicken and jerk chicken are now being made into wraps for those people looking to eat a little healthier and grab something on the go.

The Jamaican Dutchy doesn’t usually tweet, but we understand his latest location is 43rd St & 3rd Ave.  That’s pretty out of the way from our office, so if you try one, let us know how it is.
