Is Downsizing The Next Step In Street Food’s Ongoing Evolution?

While the streets seem less crowded with food trucks these days, there are several reasons for it. The biggest (and most important) reason is that over 20 food trucks have been feeding those devastated by Hurricane Sandy on a daily basis

Just as Sandy hit our shores, vendors with seasonal permits ended their seasons on Oct 31st.  Bistro Truck, the Famous Dal Wagon and a number of other vendors won’t be back until April 1st.

The most recent trend we’ve noticed is the downsizing of some street vendors.

Are You Looking To Buy A Used Food Truck?

We stopped by El Idolo Tacos yesterday, who park by us regularly on 6th Ave & Washington Place in the Village.

While our lunch was being cooked, we noticed a For Sale sign in the back window, and asked about it. Is this another food truck going out of business?

Street Eats: Cemita Con Tinga from El Idolo

October 17th, 2012

Since it was raining during lunch recently, we wanted something nearby. The El Idolo Mexican Tacos truck often parks on 6th Ave, just north of the West 4th St subway station entrance. That’s convenient for us. We ordered a sandwich and waited under the truck’s overhang, then scooted into the subway with our lunch.

Even though El Idolo is a taco truck, there are many other Mexican dishes on the menu. We were in the mood for a sandwich, meaning either a torta or cemita, and wanted something spicy on this wet, cold day. We went for a chicken tinga cemita for $7.

CHICKEN TINGA BURRITO FROM EL IDOLO TRUCK

December 1st, 2011

I had to pick up dinner last night on the way home, and the El Idolo taco truck was parked on 6th Ave just north of West 4th St. They don’t tweet their locations, but are often in this spot on evenings and weekends on the east side of 6th Ave, a block up from the basketball courts by West 3rd St.

I’ve had tacos and huaraches from El Idolo, which were pretty good.  Not amazing, but pretty good.  Last night I needed dinner and decided to get something heavier than a couple of tacos.

A couple of people in front of me got cemitas (sandwiches), which looked tasty. I almost got one – but changed my mind at the last minute to a chicken tinga burrito ($7), which came with a small salad of lettuce and avocado.

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHICKEN TINGA HUARACHE FROM EL IDOLO

November 10th, 2010

truck

I often see the El Idolo taco truck in Greenwich Village, on 6th Ave between West 4th St and Washington Place, although their schedule doesn’t seem to be that regular.  I enjoyed a couple of tacos from El Idolo last January, and after trying huaraches from Paty’s taco truck on the Upper East Side about a month ago, I wanted to try huaraches from El Idolo.

Today’s Lunch is chicken tinga huaraches ($5) from El Idolo, although I also ordered a chicken tamale that I paid for, but it didn’t end up in my lunch.
