CALEXICO CLOSES BROOME ST CART

March 19th, 2012

Calexico Carne Asada, who won the 2008 Vendy Cup and has expanded several times since then, announced about a month ago they would be serving breakfast tacos and burritos at their Broome St cart.

A week ago Friday I stopped by to try their new breakfast dishes, and the cart was nowhere to be found.  A few days ago I found out why.

CALEXICO STILL MAKES A KICK-ASS BURRITO

November 7th, 2011

Madison Square Eats may have come and gone, but Calexico is still there – as they will be year round at Broadway and 25th St.  You used to have to go to Soho or Brooklyn for Calexico, but now you can get their Vendy Award winning food in the Flatiron District.

Guess I wasn’t the only one with the same idea because when I walked up to order, they said it would be about a 20-25 minute wait.  I still went ahead and ordered a chipotle pork burrito ($8) for Today’s Lunch, and asked for it with their “crack” sauce.  Damned if I didn’t get my lunch in 23 minutes.

TODAY’S LUNCH: CHIPOTLE PORK QUESADILLA FROM CALEXICO AT MADISON SQ PARK EATS

May 20th, 2011

I’ve really enjoyed the vendors at Madison Square Eats, and I was thrilled when Calexico Carne Asada announced they were opening a new cart there.  It’s fairly tough for me to get to Soho for lunch.

The 2008 Vendy Award Winner has been expanding their empire on a regular basis, and since this was a new location, I decided to try something new (for me).

Today’s Lunch is a chipotle pork rolled quesadilla ($6), which comes with chipotle “crack” sauce (their epithet, not mine).

MADISON SQUARE PARK MARKET/CALEXICO CARNE ASADA NEWS

May 4th, 2011

Two pieces of information coming from the Calexico Carne Asada camp.

We already told you about them opening a new cart by Madison Square Park, on 24th St & Broadway.  It was only operating on weekends for the first few weeks, but will also be open during the week starting tomorrow, May 5th.

Calexico will be part of Madison Square Eats, which runs from May 6th through June 3rd, and will have tons of food vendors from 11am to 9pm daily.

According to the Madison Square Park Conservancy, the complete list of participants include (deep breath):  Asia Dog, Bar Suzette, Breezy Hill Orchard, Calexico, Carnelian Knoll, Chameleon, Cookie Panache, Eataly, Engage Green, Goat Town, Hong Kong Street Cart, ilili, Karma Living, kudu-lah, Marquet, Momofuku Milk Bar, Nunu Chocolates, P&H Soda Co.,  Piccolo Café, Resto, Roberta’s Pizza, Sigmund Pretzelshop, Stuffed Artisan Cannolis, Selen Design, Spices and Tease, The Filling Station and Yumi Chen Designs.

At the other end of the spectrum, today will be the last day :( for cart service at their Broome St location.  According to their tweet last night, this is “due to permitting issues”, and the cart will be closed until further notice.

Hopefully this situation will be resolved soon to everyone’s satisfaction. Gotta have another one of those lamb burritos.

We will keep you apprised of any new developments.

CALEXICO CARNE ASADA SETTING UP SHOP BY FLATIRON BLDG

April 23rd, 2011

Calexico Carne Asada has taken another step forward in their quest for world domination.

They started with two carts in Soho, added two restaurants in Brooklyn, another cart in Brooklyn Bridge Park and now…another cart by Madison Square Park.

This one is at 23rd & Broadway, across 23rd St from the Flatiron Bldg and across Broadway from Madison Square Park.  For now Calexico will only be there on weekends, but they expect to be open full time at this location on May 5th.

Street food in the Flatiron District is generally pretty good…and it just got a whole lot better!
