We got excited last week when we saw Calexico Carne Asada’s Daily Special was hash. Next week we’re going to Amsterdam, and figured this lunch would get us in the proper mood for visiting time in that great city.
When we got down to the cart, it turned out the daily special was chorizo hash, and didn’t include any of that other kind. Looks like we’ll have to wait until next week.
It was brutally cold (last week), and we needed to order quick, so we went for the special, which cost $8. Given the choice between tacos, burritos, quesadillas or a burrito bowl, we went for the burrito bowl.
One of the best and most reliable street food vendors in the city is Calexico Carne Asada, winners of the 2008 Vendy Cup. Four years on, they are still one of the tastiest and most consistent street carts around.
Once again, tweeting a daily special got my attention. This time it was pulled beef brisket with rajas, and it was available at both their carts.
The pulled beef brisket was available in tacos, burritos, quesadillas, or a “naked” burrito. We liked the sound of a “naked” burrito, and got that for $9.
Calexico Carne Asada, who won the 2008 Vendy Cup and has expanded several times since then, announced about a month ago they would be serving breakfast tacos and burritos at their Broome St cart.
A week ago Friday I stopped by to try their new breakfast dishes, and the cart was nowhere to be found. A few days ago I found out why.
Madison Square Eats may have come and gone, but Calexico is still there – as they will be year round at Broadway and 25th St. You used to have to go to Soho or Brooklyn for Calexico, but now you can get their Vendy Award winning food in the Flatiron District.
Guess I wasn’t the only one with the same idea because when I walked up to order, they said it would be about a 20-25 minute wait. I still went ahead and ordered a chipotle pork burrito ($8) for Today’s Lunch, and asked for it with their “crack” sauce. Damned if I didn’t get my lunch in 23 minutes.
