2012 Vendy Awards Recap: Best Dessert Category

September 17th, 2012

Nobody knew what to expect in the Best Dessert category. Five of the six finalists were frozen desserts, and while the day started off cool and breezy, it did get warm as the day progressed. Looks like weather would not be a deciding factor.

The Vendy’s decision to start a new category for Best Market Vendor was a good idea, but it also bled into the Best Dessert category, as two of the Best Dessert finalists were market vendors.

NY Street Desserts: Andy’s Italian Ices

July 27th, 2012

Now that we’re into the hot weather, it’s a good time to remind you about Andy’s Italian Ices.  Andy’s Italian Ices have nothing to do with those ices you used to eat with a wooden spoon as a kid.

Andy’s Italian Ices are handmade, and have far fewer calories and fat than ice cream.  They have water ice, creme ice, and even some sugar free flavors made with agave syrup.

Andy’s has over 45 flavors to choose from, including left-field options like margarita, bubble gum, red velvet, pomegranate, and even Red Bull on occasion.

I recently had a regular-sized watermelon for $4, and the regular size is quite large.  You can also get a large for $5, a take-home cup for $6, and there is also a kiddie size for $3.

NYSF DESSERT ALERT: ANDY’S ITALIAN ICES

August 22nd, 2011

I was walking down Park Avenue South on Friday and ran across a new truck by 19th St selling “Old Fashioned Hand Made Italian Ices”.  I only heard of Andy’s Italian Ices once before, when they stepped in at the last minute at the Long Island City Food Truck Lot when one of the scheduled trucks couldn’t make it.  I just saw on twitter they were also at the LIC Lot today.

The menu had Italian ices made with water or cream, and even a few sugar free ones, which I was told were made with agave.  The flavor menu was pretty cool, with flavors like cotton candy, margarita and cappucino crunch.
