Two years ago, a new food cart appeared on the west side of Union Square called Morocho. We were not too familiar with Peruvian cuisine, but our first visit to Morocho was excellent, and we were not the only ones to think so. Shortly after our review was published, Morocho was named as a finalist in the 2012 Vendy Awards Rookie of the Year category.

After a blazing start, Morocho was not around much last year, but now they’re back on Union Square West just north of 14th St with a custom-built food cart.

Much of the menu is the same as 2 years ago, but with all the Peruvian specialties like lomo saltado and aji de gallina, we never got around to trying their tacos.

Consider that situation remedied. Steak tacos are $4.50 each or 2 for $8. Veggie, pulled pork and chicken tacos are $3.50 each or 2 for $6. We ordered one steak and one pulled pork taco.

Each taco comes with fresh cilantro, red onions and tomato on 2 tortillas. You need 2 tortillas because these tacos are both juicy and stuffed.
The pulled pork was in a light bbq sauce, which we enjoyed. For pulled pork, this was not a heavy dish at all.

The meat in the grilled steak taco was of a higher quality than what you usually get in beef tacos. There were a nice amount of juices soaking into the first tortilla, which made the second tortilla reinforcements even more crucial.

Some vendors sell tacos for $2.50 or $3, but we would rather pay a little more for better quality ingredients like they have at Morocho. Not only is it better for your body, but you only need 2 tacos for a satisfying lunch instead of 3.

While Morocho is on Union Square West most days for lunch and dinner, they told us they will be exploring new areas for lunch some days. We suggested Broadway between 55th & 56th St, and a few other popular midtown street vendor locations.

The best way to find out if Morocho have moved locations is on Twitter here or on the Mobile Munchies Twitter feed.

If they come to your neck of the woods, we highly recommend the Poor Man’s Burger or the Pork Belly Sandwich.
