We’re back in LA again this week, for the 2nd time this year. Good thing there are tons of great food trucks around.

When we were here back in March, the Santa Monica Food Truck Lot was only in its 2nd week of existence. Now it’s getting seasoned around the edges, and there were even more trucks squeezed into the lot behind the California Heritage Museum.

One truck we’ve heard great things about, but hadn’t had a chance to try yet is Komodo. Time to rectify that situation.

Komodo serves tacos and fries, but with a much more interesting menu. Tacos are $3 each, but you can get a Killer Combo with 4 tacos for $10. Well, it was dinner time!

We saw that Domo Taco recently revamped their menu, with a bunch of new dishes and the removal of other dishes.

In addition to tacos and rice bowls, they now have quesadillas and burritos for main courses. On the protein front, kimchi falafel, an occasional special, was added to the regular menu, as was tempura shrimp.

For appetizers, they kept the nacho tots but got rid of the yakisoba. Domo Taco also added an over easy mulita, a 7-layer dip, and fried gyoza to the starters.

Wanting to try the new items, we ordered the gyoza appetizer for $4 and a shrimp tempura quesadilla for $8.

After waiting for 25 minutes, we finally got our lunch! That’s way too long.

Taco Bite has only been around since the end of the summer, but they have a good following, and deservedly so. While their taco fundamentals are solid, it’s their sauces that keep us coming back for more.

For this visit, we ordered grilled steak and grilled chicken tacos. At $3 each, we like getting lunch for $6 too.

Street Eats: New Fish & Chicken Tacos from Kimchi Taco Truck

What’s a good way to get people to try new menu items? How about removing existing items from the menu and only having the new items for a “trial period”. That’s guaranteed to either make new converts or piss people off. Either way, it shows confidence in your team, and the new dishes they created.

Kimchi Taco Truck started 2013 with two new tacos yesterday – fried fish and fried chicken. They also brought out Big Belly Burritos to replace the Kim-Cheesesteak, but that’s for another day.

We looove fish tacos, so it was a long walk back to the office in anticipation of that first bite. (It was also f-ing freezing out, which made the walk seem longer than usual too.)

So what was on new tacos from Kimchi Taco Truck besides fish and chicken, and how were they?

Street Eats: Shrimp Tacos & A Conch Fritter From Fishing Shrimp

November 7th, 2012

The Fishing Shrimp Truck has been off the road since Hurricane Sandy. When the situation gets better, they will return to our streets. When they do, we highly recommend the shrimp tacos, which we had a day before the storm hit.

Trying to keep up on the latest menu changes can be tricky, but there are worse jobs. :)

Fishing Shrimp has been trying some new things lately, such as po’ boys with fish or oysters, but the one that got out attention was shrimp tacos. We love shrimp in almost all of its guises, and shrimp tacos are up there on our list.

We all know shrimp ain’t cheap, but one shrimp taco here costs $5 and two are $8. It seemed like a lot to pay $5 for one taco, so we got two, which lowered the taco per unit cost to $4. See how we just rationalized that. Learn from a pro!

Who can survive on one taco for lunch anyway? Maybe a 10 year old, but not us. As an added bonus, they were giving away a free conch fritter to people who saw their tweet that morning and mentioned it. Nice little bonus.
