There are a couple of adages about food that we try to live by.  The first is that bacon makes anything taste good.  The second is that everything tastes better fried – which lead us right into today’s Street Eats.

The Frying Dutchmen was founded by Ben Goldberg, who decided to open a food truck serving Dutch & Belgian-style frites after trying them on a trip to Amsterdam.  He first started with potato and sweet potato fries served in a cone with kick-ass dipping sauces.  A few months ago, several burgers and chicken sandwiches were added to the menu.

You don’t have to get fried chicken – they also serve grilled chicken and burgers – but I figure if you’re going down the fried road, there’s no point in going halfway.

I got a fried chicken sandwich combo, which costs $11 with a large order of fries, a drink, and your choice of dipping sauce.

The fried chicken sandwich was comprised of two large chicken tenders that made a nice-sized sandwich when put together on the bread.  Add some lettuce, tomato and a sweet honey-mayo sauce, and you have the makings of a crunchy, tasty sandwich.

If you can’t decide what types of fries to get, do what I do and order 1/2 potato and 1/2 sweet potato.  It doesn’t cost any more, and provides some variety.

The potato fries were thick, and while I wouldn’t call them crisp, they were definitely not mushy.  They were lightly salted, and went perfectly with the dipping sauce they suggested.

The Frying Dutchmen usually has between 8-10 dipping sauces to choose from, and I went with Locked & Loaded, which was on the daily special menu, but not the printed menu.  Locked & Loaded is made with sour cream, bacon, cheddar cheese and chives, so when you dip in a potato fry, it tastes just like a baked potato.  Mmm!

Locked & Loaded didn’t really go with the sweet potato fries, but that was fine, because I enjoyed the sweet potato fries all by themselves.  They were lightly dusted with salt and a little sugar.  With a sweet dipping sauce, they could almost be dessert.

Everyone who’s been to college knows how bad dining hall food can be.  Three students at Bowdoin College have come up with a partial solution while still maintaining full class schedules  – a weekend food truck.

The weekend-only food truck, run by Steve Borukhin, Class of 2014, and Isaac Brower and Eric Edelman, both Class of 2013 will cater to late-night cravings long after the last campus food option closes its doors.

Brower already owned a fully-functional food truck, from which he runs Duo’s Takeout in Rockland during the summer.

From the Bowdoin Orient: “He had actually thought about bringing the truck to campus, but he didn’t have the energy or the team to do it by himself,” said Edelman of Browser. “It was a great situation where we were willing to put the work in, but didn’t have the physical capital, and he had the capital, but not necessarily the time to do the work.”

Negotiations with the school “had many phases and took a lot of time,” said Borukhin. “We were told ‘yes’ coming out of last year, in early August we were waiting on a contract and they nixed it, changed their minds.”

The trio plans to run Thursday through Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. and hopes to hire a team of students to operate the truck in three-hour shifts.

The menu will consist of standard American dishes like burgers, wraps, fries, and onion rings as well as “falafel for the vegans” and a rotating menu of specials, which, Edelman says, could incorporate some of his more creative ideas, such as fried Oreos.

Who says college is all about partying?  Someone needs to feed the partying masses.

It’s already February and the warm weather is just around the corner.  Time to plan ahead if you want to have a food truck (or 3) at your spring or summer event.

One of the tastiest and most interesting food trucks in NYC is Mexicue.   As it says on their website, Mexicue is “the sweet, sweet love child of red-hot Mexican cuisine and down-home, barbeque goodness.”  We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

One of the thing we’ve learned over the past few years of eating at food trucks is to definitely check out the daily or weekly specials.  They are often seasonal, and are usually as good, if not better, than the regular menu.  If a vendor is going to highlight a dish, I’ll give it a try.

Mexicue had 2 specials when we went there recently, and we also got one of our favorite regular menu items, a burnt ends chili slider.

The first thing we picked up was the burnt ends chili slider ($3.50), which had sliced, pickled jalapeños and crema on top of the chili.  You know how some chili can be mostly meat and some chili can be mostly beans – this was mostly meat.

The chili had a sweet, smoky bbq-type sauce, and was excellent on a slider.  The bun was pillow-soft, and the pickled jalapeños were a perfect addition, kicking up the heat level a notch or two.  Mmm good!

The next item we tried was the BLT taco ($3.50).  Every few months, Mexicue has a recipe contest where people send in recipes using one specific ingredient.  Previous contests were for sweet corn, butternut squash and cheddar cheese. You can find out about the contests from their newsletter, which you can sign up for here.

The most recent recipe contest was with bacon, and the winning recipe was a BLT taco.  In addition to bacon, there was lettuce, thinly-sliced green tomatoes, crumbled cojita cheese and chipotle mayo.  This was a pretty good taco, but I added a little bit of their homemade sweet BBQ sauce, which went very well with the bacon.

The last item I ate was a taco with BBQ beets, goat cheese, cilantro and lettuce.  I didn’t think I liked beets, but this dish turned my preconceptions on their ear.  The beets were soft but not mushy, with a slight grilled flavor.  Goat cheese was an inspired choice to go with the beets instead of cheddar, jack or something along those lines.  The cilantro added some herbiness to the taco too.  I don’t care if you think you like beets or not – give this one a try.

They also have two storefronts, one on the Lower East Side and one near Penn Station, which is perfect if you go to a game or concert at Madison Square Garden.  It’s much better than the fast food in that area.  The stores serve beer and wine too, and it’s much cheaper than MSG.

The World Financial Center Food Truck Lot we told you about a few weeks ago will open Monday, Feb 6th.  An official press release was just received, so you can take this to the bank.

There will be 21 participating food trucks rotating in a new lunchtime food market directly outside Four World Financial Center on North End Avenue and Vesey Street.  The World Financial Center Food Truck Court will offer fresh savory and sweet foods weekdays a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., through 2013.

When you think of Jerusalem, street food is not the first (or even the 10th) thing that comes to mind.

But the Travel Channel recently shone a spotlight on one of the highlights of street food in Jerusalem – fried dough with cheese in the middle.   What isn’t better fried, especially cheese!

We’ve enjoyed most of the items on the Red Hook Lobster Truck menu, so we were really looking forward to one of the items we haven’t tried yet – the Lobster BLT ($10).

The lobster BLT comes on the same lightly-toasted, top-sliced bun they use for the lobster rolls.  In addition to a healthy dose of lobster mixed with apple chipotle mayo, there are 2 thick slices of bacon and tomato on the bun.

It’s all topped with paprika, which gives the sandwich a nice color, and adds a slightly smoky flavor that complements the lobster really well.

I didn’t really detect apple in the mayo, but it was still a delicious lunch.  Lobster and bacon are a fantastic combo.

After I finished eating the roll, I found a pickle spear hidden behind the wrapper, which was kind of like finding the prize in Cracker Jacks.
