THE 1ST NEW YORK STREET FOOD TOUR WAS A GREAT SUCCESS

May 29th, 2011

The 1st New York Street Food Walking Tour was held on Friday (May 27) and a good time was had by all.

When I started putting this tour together, I expected it would be mainly tourists, but the first group was all New Yorkers or ex-New Yorkers coming back to visit.

One tour guest, Katie, emailed me afterwards that said “Thanks again for the tour Friday. I’ve lived in NY for 10 years and had never looked beyond pretzels and falafel.  I can’t wait to hit the streets again.”

In addition to sampling food from 6 different vendors including Indian, Korean and Jamaican food among others, tour guests also received a map with 25 NYSF Suggested Vendors to try in the future.

Another guest, Cindy, told me after the tour that the food was great, but her favorite part was when the vendors came out to speak with the group.  They talked about how they got into this business, and answered whatever questions people had.

The tour has attracted attention outside New York as well.  On June 3rd, a TV crew from Korea will be following the tour, and on June 10th, a TV crew from Germany will be following the tour.

If you are a New York Street Food reader, we would love to have you join the tour, which is only given on Friday afternoons during the summer.  If you click on the “Buy Now” button at the bottom of this link and put the code NYSF in the Paypal message box, you will receive a $10 rebate from the tour price within 24 hours.

Delicious samples from 6 New York street food vendors, info on many other great vendors, and a chance to speak with some of the vendors and ask them questions for $30 (after the NYSF rebate).  Now that’s a great deal.

THE NYSF WALKING TOUR IS GOING VIRAL

April 14th, 2011

Wow, it’s been a crazy day!

Today the NY Post wrote about the NYSF Walking Tour that was announced on Monday, and we’ve been bombarded by interview requests all day.  People really seem to like the idea.

So far today, we have done interviews with WCBS (880AM) and WINS (1010AM), and set up interviews for next week with Valerie’s New York on WOR (710AM) and Taking Stock on Bloomberg Radio (1130AM).

We were also contacted by a producer from one of the (national) morning TV talk shows who wants us to take the show’s anchors around NY for some great NY Street Food.  We’re talking about setting it up for early June.  If this comes through, it will be amazing!

Of course, none of this would be possible without the creativity, skill and hard work of the vendors who feed us every day.  Thank you all.

Although the Post printed more information than we wanted, we have a lot more knowledge that will be imparted to people taking the tour than can be contained in one article.

In addition to sampling food from 5 or 6 different street food vendors, we will also tell people on the tour about many other great street food vendors they can try in the future.

Available Tour Dates: May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12, August 19, August 26 & September 2.

Click the “Buy Now” button below to book the New York Street Food Walking Tour.  Make sure to indicate in the payment form which date you want to attend.

Is the New York Street Food Walking Tour appropriate for New Yorkers as well as tourists?

The New York Street Food Walking Tour is fun, informative and enjoyable for New Yorkers and tourists alike.

For tourists, it offers the chance to experience New York City like a local.  It also offers a glimpse into the “melting pot” aspect of New York City, with most of the street vendors having immigrated to the USA from other countries.  The New York Street Food Walking Tour can also reduce the food budget for your trip by providing you with delicious places to eat that are significantly cheaper than New York City restaurants.

For New Yorkers, it provides an opportunity to experience a vibrant and exciting part of New York City life of which you may only know a little, or would like to learn more about.

Street food is becoming very popular for many reasons, and the tour will give you a place to begin your journey, as well as provide a path forward to explore this part of New York City life at your leisure.

If you love New York City, the New York Street Food Walking Tour is a way to do something different, tasty and fun with family, friends, or even on a date!

TOUR LOGISTICS

Where do we meet up for my tour?

After you make your reservation, you will receive a confirmation email that will include a map with directions about the designated meeting place for the tour.  The tours are only held during the summer on Friday afternoons at 2:15 pm in midtown Manhattan.

What happens if there is inclement weather on the day of my tour?

The New York Street Food Walking Tour will happen rain or shine.  Please plan ahead and dress for the weather.  In extreme cases, we reserve the right to cancel tours if the weather conditions are dangerous.  In this case, we will contact you as far in advance as possible, and a full refund will be issued.  You can get an extended 15-day advance forecast for New York City on Accu-Weather.com here .

What should I wear?

Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothing, especially comfortable walking shoes!  Don’t carry anything heavy, and if it’s raining outside, please make sure to dress appropriately and bring an umbrella.  It shouldn’t be too cold, but if it is, please dress appropriately!

How far will we walk on the tour?

The tour will involve approximately 20-25 city blocks of walking, which is a little over one mile.  We will walk at a casual pace, but being New Yorkers, our natural tendency is to walk quickly.  If you would like us to slow down, please ask.

Will there be opportunities to use the restroom during the tour?

While there are no public facilities along the route, it may be possible to use restrooms in hotel lobbies along the route, if necessary.

Will there be opportunities to sit down during the tour?

Yes, there will be at least one opportunity to sit down during the tour, although it will most likely be outdoors.

Are cameras allowed on the tours?

Yes, of course!  If you are visiting New York City, the tour should be one of the highlights of your trip.  We encourage you to share your photographs afterward on our facebook page.  However, we ask that you not videotape the tour.

What about tips and gratuities?

Tips are never required.  The tour is run by the founder and owner of New York Street Food, who should not be tipped.  However, his assistant would probably appreciate a tip, if you think he did a good job.
