NYSF IN LA: DELICIOUS RAMEN FROM ROKYO

April 28th, 2011

One of my favorite meals is ramen.  Nothing like a great broth with noodles and lots of other stuff in it, especially in the cold weather.  After trying some Korean snacks from Ahn-Joo, I came across Rokyo Gourmet Ramen and knew immediately what I was having for dinner at the Highland Park Din-Din-A-Go-Go.

Well, it’s not cold in L.A., but I still was eagerly looking forward to trying ramen from Rokyo.  The sign said their noodles are organic, and they make them fresh every day. They also let you choose which toppings you want in the ramen.

I’ll tell you what toppings I chose after the jump, but just look at this baby! Wow!

NYSF IN LA: KOREAN NACHOS & MORE FROM AHN-JOO

April 28th, 2011

At the Highland Park Din-Din-A-Go-Go, there were 7 trucks parked along a narrow stretch of a parking lot.  Before checking out all the trucks, I decided to have a couple of Korean nibbles from Ahn-Joo, which means “snack” in Korean.  Their philosophy is to serve Korean pub food from the truck.

This truck and a bunch of the others seem to be sponsored by Brisk Ice Tea, which is why the truck looks like it has a Mexican guy on it (actor Danny Trejo) and not Korean artwork.  About half of the trucks here had the same wrap, with only the truck names being different.

Guess Brisk Ice Tea is jumping feet first into the food truck phenomenon.  When I was in Austin for SXSW, they sponsored a free taco giveaway from one of the taco trucks, but I wasn’t able to get there.

Nevertheless, the menu looked interesting for a few appetizers before dinner.  They had noodle dishes, several types of skewers, and even some large dishes like Korean fried cicken and meatloaf – but what really caught my eye was Korean nachos.

I ordered the Korean nachos (on special for $5, usually $7) and a skewer of spicy chicken and peppers ($3).

NYSF IN LA: BRATWURST FROM LET’S BE FRANK

April 28th, 2011

As I mentioned in my post yesterday about the Border Grill, since they ran out of churro tots, I needed something else to get me through the afternoon until dinner.  Luckily, Let’s Be Frank was right next to the Border Grill truck.

After I ordered a bratwurst ($5.50), he asked if I wanted Devil’s Sauce, mustard and sauerkraut on it.  I wasn’t familiar with Devil Sauce, and he said it was kind of like chutney flavor.  I asked for everything except sauerkraut.  I like sauerkraut, but just wasn’t in the mood for it.

NYSF IN LA: TACOS FROM BORDER GRILL

April 27th, 2011

So yesterday I went over to the same spot for lunch on Alameda, and there was another choice to make – Border Grill or Let’s Be Frank.

Let’s Be Frank looked pretty good. They make their own hot dogs, which are free from a lot of the junk that’s in many hot dogs (hormones, nitrates, etc), and they get their meat from farm co-ops.  I really like their philosophy about food.

I’ve heard good things about Border Grill and wanted to try them even before this trip.  They have two restaurants in LA, a food stand in downtown, another restaurant in Vegas and the food truck.   I generally favor the little guy over the big one, but when I saw they had fish tacos, that sealed it.

NYSF IN LA: SHIVA-SHAKTI DOSA FROM THE DOSA TRUCK

April 27th, 2011

The other night in Los Feliz, I had a chance to try a dosa from the Dosa Truck.  I’ve had great dosas from Thiru of the NY Dosa Cart and good dosas from the Sami Dosa cart, also in NYC.  How would the Dosa Truck compare?
