We were downtown for lunch yesterday, which is a fairly rare occurrence, but one we wanted to take full advantage of. What better way than to have lunch from Veronica’s Kitchen?

Veronica’s Kitchen is a stalwart of the Financial District, serving lunch on Front St by Pine St for many years. In fact, Veronica’s was a Vendy Award Finalist in the 3rd Vendys, back in 2007.

Because of the snow, the cart was on Water St by Pine St, but that looks to be a temporary situation.

It was our first time at Veronica’s Kitchen, and the line was about 12 people long, so we did our best to see what others were ordering.

Even though the menu is a decent size, everyone seemed to be ordering jerk chicken, and we did the same. A small is $6 and a large is $8. Both come with your choice of 2 side dishes.

Déjà Vu All Over Again With The Jamaican Dutchy Cart

December 13th, 2012

Walking down 7th Ave yesterday, we saw the Jamaican Dutchy cart in its old spot on 51st St just east of 7th Ave.

What’s going on? Were we accidentally transported back in time to 2010?

NYSF In London: Jerk Pork Sausage Wrap from Mama’s Jerk Station

While there are a number of Jamaican street vendors in New York, we have not seen jerk sausage before. We love any type of meat in tube form, and watching it being grilled, the jerk sausage at Mama’s Jerk Station was calling our name.

When that happens, you have to listen. The jerk sausage wrap cost £5 (about $7.50).

Street Eats: Jerk Chicken from Sunrise Grill

October 23rd, 2012

We’ve been spending a little more time in the Financial District for lunch lately, and ran across Sunrise Grill by Wall & Water St last week.  The guy on line in front of me said they usually park by 125 Broad St, but someone important was in town (Prez?) and that block was closed for the day.

We first saw Sunrise Grill at last year’s Taste of the Parks event, where the NYC Parks Dept introduced the public to some of the new vendors given contracts to serve in various city parks. Unfortunately, they ran out of food early that day, but we did get a chance to try their food at the 2011 Vendy Awards, where they were Rookie of the Year nominees.

The guy in front of me seemed like a regular, so we asked him what he recommended. If we like spicy food, he said the jerk chicken. The only remaining issue then was small, medium or large for $8, $10 or $12. We went for medium.

Street Eats: Fried Chicken from Jamaican Dutchy, 2009 Vendy Cup Finalist

September 12th, 2012

We were in the Grand Central area recently for lunch, and for some reason, had a hankering for fried chicken. You may wonder where to get fried chicken on the street, but we know a few places, such as Okadaman and Jerk Pan.

This time we went to the Jamaican Dutchy, the 2009 Vendy Cup Finalist who parks on 43rd St & 3rd Ave every day. While their side dishes may be Jamaican, the fried chicken is fairly similar to the Southern fried chicken we all know and love.

The Dutchy has a $5 fried chicken meal that you can get with white or dark meat. The choices are either 1 breast and 2 wings or 1 thigh and 2 legs. We opted for the breast and wings. If you wanted it mixed up, they would probably do that for you too. In fact, we ended up with a mixed platter, even though we didn’t order it.
