TODAY’S LUNCH: BROWN STEW CHICKEN FROM THE JERK PAN

August 22nd, 2011

I was over by Grand Central for a late morning meeting, and when I got out, I had a hankering for some Jamaican food.  The Jerk Pan truck is only a few blocks north of Grand Central, on the SE corner of 48th St & Park Ave, and I really enjoyed their fried chicken earlier this year.

Perusing the main courses on their menu, the brown stew chicken looked interesting.  I got a medium size ($8) for Today’s Lunch.  They also have a large size for $10.50, but judging from past experience, I knew the medium size to be plenty.

JAMAICAN DUTCHY CLOSED THIS WEEK, BUT RETURNING NEXT WEEK WITH A NEW TRUCK

May 31st, 2011

We spoke with O’Neill Reid on Friday during the New York Street Food Walking Tour, and he told us Jamaican Dutchy was going to be closed this week – but next week when he returns to 51st St & 7th Ave, it will be with a brand new truck and an expanded menu.

The 2009 Vendy Award Finalist told us the new menu will include burgers fries, wraps and salads in addition to the Jamaican favorites he cooked for the cart.

Looking forward to checking out O’Neill’s new menu next week.

JERK PAN SHOULD BE BACK ON 48TH & PARK MONDAY

May 20th, 2011

We got a frantic email yesterday from Tim, a NYSF reader.  He read our review of the wonderful fried chicken at Jerk Pan on the SE corner of 48th St & Park Ave, and headed over to get some.

His email said: “It’s not there!  My partner just went there.  Are they still in business?”

We contacted Andrew from the Jerk Pan, and without going into specifics, he told us “if all goes well I will be back to work on Monday”.

Check out the fried chicken below.  It tastes as good as it looks.

As they say in Jamaica, no worries mon!

JAMAICAN DUTCHY ADDING A TRUCK

May 19th, 2011

We just got some great news from O’Neill Reid, owner of the Jamaican Dutchy cart, and a 2009 Vendy Award Finalist.   He will be adding a big, blue Jamaican Dutchy truck to go along with his cart.

O’Neill tells us the truck will be parked alongside the cart on 51st St just east of 7th Ave, where he will be able to offer a greatly expanded menu.

Currently, he only has 2 sandwiches available on the cart – a jerk chicken one and a veggie one.  With the truck, O’Neill will be offering a lot more choices for sandwiches, and will have salads, burgers, french fries and more.  The food on the cart will remain the same.

The Jamaican Dutchy truck is not quite ready yet, but O’Neill tells us he expects the truck to be on the street either June 2nd or 3rd, towards the end of the week following Memorial Day.

Congratulations on the truck O’Neill.  We look forward to trying even more of your wonderful food.

Jamaican Dutchy’s website is here, twitter is here and facebook is here, but we will keep you abreast of any new developments.

TODAY’S LUNCH: FRIED CHICKEN FROM THE JERK PAN

February 18th, 2011

truck used

I had only been to the Jerk Pan on the SE corner of 48th St and Park Ave once before, and it was close to a year ago.  I wanted some fried chicken that day, but they were sold out by 1:15.  I ended up getting their jerk chicken, and really enjoyed it.

I was in the mood for fried chicken again today, so I got to the Jerk Pan earlier.  There was plenty of chicken left – in fact, they were just taking fresh pieces of fried chicken out of the fryer when I walked up to the window…and they were still sizzling.

Today’s Lunch is a “small” fried chicken platter ($7.50) from the Jerk Pan truck , which comes with 2 side dishes.  They also have a “large” platter for $9.50.
