Street Eats: Fish Over Rice from the Madison & 28th Halal Truck

If you’ve ever walked by Madison Ave & 28th St, no doubt you’ve seen the halal truck that’s been parking there for years. We’ve walked by the truck dozens of times, but only recently stopped for lunch. One thing’s for sure – this is one of the longest food trucks around.

The menu is standard halal truck fare, but they seem to have a pretty good following. One thing they don’t seem to have is a name, with only Halal Food written on the signs.

This vendor does serve fish over rice, which you don’t see too often. We’ve seen this vendor around for enough years to feel comfortable ordering fish over rice for $6.

They also have chicken, “lamb”, falafel, gyros, burgers and a few more things, if you’re not feeling as adventurous as us.

Halalathon Winner Crowned In Queens

February 20th, 2013

winner Jeffrey Tastes

We know about the Vendy Awards and even Street Meat Palooza, but the Halalathon is a new one to us. Maybe that’s because this is the 1st year it was held.

From DNAInfo: There’s a new halal champion in Jackson Heights.

A group of Queens foodies awarded a lamb-topped trophy to the halal food cart on the corner of 74th Street and 37th Avenue, declaring it the winner of the first-ever “Halalathon,” a search for the best halal in a neighborhood loaded with options.

Three judges were joined by 10 lucky volunteers to try food from 11 different spots within a mile radius of the Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street stop in Jackson Heights.

One of the judges, Jeff Orlick, 31, who runs food tours through his Queens food blog Jeffrey Tastes and helped organize Woks and Lox in December, said he’d always avoided the carts, thinking they were nothing more than plain street food.

But since trying all of the neighborhood’s options to prepare for Halalathon, he’s come to appreciate the cuisine, he said.

“It’s a New York thing,” said Orlick, a Jackson Heights resident. “People want their food cheap and quick, on the way home from work.”

NYSF Guest Post: K Brothers Halal Food Cart

January 4th, 2013

As a small operation, we don’t have the luxury of reporters scouring the city for us, finding the best street food vendors. What we do have (besides our love of great street food) is people who want to tell us about their favorite places to eat on the street.

This NYSF Guest Post comes from Antony LaBozzetta, who loves the K Brothers Halal Food cart near his office in Chelsea.

Street Eats: Sauteed Fish from Tariq’s #1 Halal Food Cart

July 30th, 2012

(credit: NYSF)

We discovered Tariq’s #1 Halal Food Cart from New York Street Food reader JR who emailed us about this great new cart on the NW corner of 19th St & Park Ave. JR told us about his experiences in a Guest Post, and a bunch of other readers commented  about how much they like both Tariq and his food.

We had a chance to stop by Tariq’s #1 cart recently, and based on one of our other readers’ comments, decided to get the fish for $7. We really enjoy fish, but don’t get to eat it as often as we would like at home.

NYSF Guest Post: Tariq’s #1 Halal Food Cart by JR

July 11th, 2012

We always like to hear about good street food from readers who love it as much as we do. If there is a street vendor you think goes above and beyond the usual street fare, let us know about it. We might even ask you to write a Guest Post, as we did with JR.

JR emailed us a few days ago about a cart that he really likes near his office that’s on the NW corner of Park Ave South & 19th St. It looks just like another generic cart from the outside, but the tip-off is the sign taped to the front of the cart with Daily Specials like shrimp biryani, chicken tikka masala and kati rolls. That means the cart is Indian cuisine as opposed to the usual halal carts. (Update: There is now a sign that says Tariq’s #1 Halal Food)

Without further ado, here is JR’s review of Tariq’s cart, along with some good-looking photos he took.
