TODAY’S LUNCH: BAVARIAN MEATBALL HERO FROM HALLO BERLIN

December 9th, 2011

While eating some Mighty Balls yesterday, I was reminded of the Bavarian meatball hero at Hallo Berlin.

Last time I was at Hallo Berlin on 54th St just west of 5th Ave, the guy in front of me ordered a Bavarian meatball hero, and it looked pretty good.  I’ve been wanting to try one ever since.

Hallo Berlin won the Vendy Cup in 2006, and every wurst I’ve had there has been delicious – but could Wolfgang pull off Bavarian meatballs?  Today’s Lunch is a Bavarian meatball hero ($4) from Hallo Berlin.

CURRYWURST – YEA OR NAY?

November 30th, 2011

The recently closed Currywurst Bros in NYC

The Boston Globe had an article about the recent popularity of currywurst in Los Angeles. (Yeah, I’m wondering why the Boston Globe is writing about restaurants in L.A. too.)  There are now 2 places to get currywurst in L.A., one in the Fairfax district and one in Silverlake.

We know currywurst is the national street food of Germany, but how well does it translate to US palates?

VIENNA’S WURST STANDS AT NIGHT

October 19th, 2011

Flavorpill ran a feature on Austrian photographer Stefan Fürtbauer’s Eiterquellen series, which captured the fluorescent-lit food kiosks of Vienna against the dramatic blackness of the city at night.

In a statement about the project, Fürtbauer explains that these “wurstel diners” date back to the 19th century and have become both “the place of the distinctive Viennese working class” and a last bastion of resistance against multinational fast-food chains.

He also points out that their steel, chrome, and neon architecture bears some resemblance to American diners of the ’60s.

Visit Fürtbauer’s website to see more of his work, or check out the Flavorpill feature here, which has 10 of his photos.

Very cool indeed!

TODAY’S LUNCH: ALPENWURST & SMOKED KIELBASA FROM HALLO BERLIN

October 14th, 2011

I was walking down 5th Ave at lunchtime, and when I got to 54th St, I looked west and saw that Hallo Berlin only had 3 people on line.  Now that’s something I had to take advantage of!

The line at Hallo Berlin, the winner of the very first Vendy Award,  is usually at least 10 people at lunch.   It turned out to be a good call, because by the time I walked away with my lunch, there were at least 8 people on line behind me.

For Today’s Lunch, I decided to get a smoked kielbasa ($5.50) and an alpenwurst ($5), both with “the works”.  There are 9 different types of wurst available at Hallo Berlin, plus Bavarian meatballs, which the guy in front of me got.  They looked really good too.  You can view the full menu here.

CHICKEN SCHNITZEL PLATTER FROM SCHNITZEL & THINGS

August 17th, 2011

I had to speak with a couple of the food truck owners, so I headed over to the Lot on 30th St yesterday where they were parked.  And since I was already there, how could I not get some schnitz?

I just love the chicken schnitzel platter ($10) from Schnitzel  Things.
