Street Eats: The Treats Truck

May 15th, 2012

One of the true pioneers of the NYC food truck scene is Kim Ima and The Treats Truck.  They have been around since 2007, and were given a Best Dessert award at the 2008 Vendy Awards, before the Best Dessert category even existed.

Always evolving, last year Kim came out with the Treats Truck Baking Book, and last weekend, the Treats Truck Stop opened at 521 Court St in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.  We heard there was a toast (with milk and cookies) and a ribbon cutting.  The closest subway stop is the Carroll stop on the F or G.

But this column is about food trucks, and last week I stopped by the Treats Truck to sample a selection of different treats.  I got a Mexican brownie, a raspberry ring and a kitchen sink crispy.

Mobile Munchies for Tues, May 15th

May 15th, 2012

It might not be the nicest weather today, but you should still enjoy great New York Street Food from the vendors on the right and the trucks below.

We hear there’s a NEW FOOD TRUCK LOT called the Hudson Square Food Truck Lot (@HdsnSqFoodTruck) that’s opening today.  It’s on Varick/Grand/6th Ave/Canal St right by the Canal St station on the #1 train.  The first trucks there today will be Kimchi Taco, Milk Truck, Mexico Blvd and Kelvin Slush.  We’ll try to stop by as soon as we can.

As always, check the Mobile Munchies twitter feed before heading out, in case anyone had to move at the last minute.

And a big Happy Birthday to Big D.  Stop by Old SLip & Water St to wish him well.

Tavern On The Green Food Trucks Return (For Now)

May 15th, 2012

Last week we reported about food trucks returning to the old Tavern on the Green site.  We really enjoyed going there last summer, but the city’s Parks Department said it would not allow the trucks to return this season because of upcoming renovations at the site

Pera Turkish Tacos and Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream were reportedly serving towards the end of last week, so we stopped by the site yesterday, pieced some information together, and now we think we know what’s going on.

In the first few months of 2012, it seemed like things were slowing up from the frantic pace of new food trucks and carts in 2011.  Now that it’s mid-May and we’re hearing about all these commencement addresses, it seems like a good time to see who graduated to putting a food truck on the streets of NYC in the New York Street Food Class of 2012.

There are lots more new vendors than we originally realized.

NYSF First Look: Roast Pork Special Sandwich from Shorty’s

May 14th, 2012

A couple of months ago we told you about Shorty’s, a Philly-centric sports bar with two locations here in NYC that was opening a food truck.  This weekend was their soft opening, and they hope to be on the street regularly in about a week.

We had a chance to stop by the Union Square area on Saturday, their first day out, and as always with a new truck, we asked for their recommendation.  The owner, Evan Stein, suggested a Roast Pork Special, which has homemade broccoli rabe and sharp provolone and cost $11.
