TODAY’S LUNCH: HOT DOGS FROM SNACKBOX

January 5th, 2012

I was in Times Square at lunchtime, picking up 2 for 1 tickets to a show for Broadway Week.  If you still want 2 for 1 Broadway tickets, get online quick.  Most of the best tickets are already gone.

Since I was in Times Square, I decided to try Snackbox, a new kiosk in the pedestrian plaza on Broadway at 46th St.  They have a decent variety of items for a Times Square street vendor with hot dogs, chili dogs, lobster rolls (?), Sigmund pretzels, donuts, coffee and a few other things.

I wasn’t brave enough to try an $11.75 lobster roll (maybe one day).  Today’s Lunch is Snack Pack 2, which is 2 hot dogs and a bag of chips for $7.95.  You can see the Snackbox main menu here, the Snack Pack menu here, and the dessert menu here.

SINGAPORE TAKEOUT: STREET FOOD FROM SINGAPORE IN NYC

September 19th, 2011

As I briefly mentioned last week, Singapore Takeout came to NYC over the weekend for a 2 day pop-up stand in Gansevoort Park.  You needed a ticket for entry, but the tickets were free.

Singapore Takeout, a traveling pop-up restaurant, is Singapore’s way of bringing their cuisine to the world.  Prior to NYC, they were in London, Paris and Moscow, and they were going to a bunch of other places after NYC before finally ending in Sydney.

Chef Malcolm Lee is the head chef, and he was on hand to personally serve each dish.  There were 3 dishes available – pork buns, laksa and 48-hour short rib.  Of course I tried all 3!

AUSTIN FOOD TRAILER ALLIANCE GETTING OFF THE GROUND

July 5th, 2011

Our friend and colleague, Tony Yamanaka, who runs FoodTrailersAustin.com, has recently set up the Food Trailer Alliance.  Last week, they had their 2nd meeting.

Similar to the NYC Food Truck Association, the organization consists of food trailer owners in Austin who are banding together to improve working conditions for all.  (more…)

NYSF IN AUSTIN: EL DIABLO TACOS

March 22nd, 2011

trailer

For the final installment of NYSF In Austin, we’re bringing it all back home, and making a direct connection between Austin and New York.

What do Austin and New York have in common besides great street food, an awesome music scene, and lots of hipsters:  El Diablo Tacos, who started in the backyard of the Union Pool Hall in Brooklyn, and just last week opened a trailer in the backyard of the Barbarella and Swan Dive bars at 615 Red River in Austin.

Although we haven’t been to El Diablo Tacos in Brooklyn, they have enough of a reputation to be listed in our food truck directory.  It’s pretty funny that we are first trying them in Austin, but they are the perfect vendor for bringing it all back home.

NYSF IN AUSTIN: FRIED PORK TENDERLOIN SANDWICH FROM TENDERLAND

March 17th, 2011

Truck

I took a walk along 6th St, the street in Austin with many of the bars, clubs and restaurants.  After walking east past I-35, there were several lots filled with food trucks.  I’ll do another post with pictures of some of the cooler trailers, but this one is about dinner last night.

With all the choices, it was pretty tough to decide, but I settled on Tenderland, which has a fried pork tenderloin sandwich ($5.50) that looked pretty tasty. I wasn’t sure if I was going to run across another must-try trailer later on (like Ms P’s Electric Cock), so I went with the regular size sandwich instead of the plate-size sandwich.
