ARE FOOD TRUCKS ARE COMING TO BATTERY PARK CITY?

December 14th, 2011

With construction on 2 World Financial Center expected to take a few years, Brookfield Properties, who have been instrumental in bringing outdoor food kiosks to the World Financial Center plaza, are looking to bring in five food trucks per week to sell lunch.

According to Downtown Express, if the Battery Park City Authority agrees, Brookfield plans to allow food trucks to park in the cul-de-sac between 4 World Financial Center and the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Brookfield said they would work with the New York City Food Truck Association, which currently has 30 members, inviting five vendors a week to sell their wares in B.P.C. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The five vendors would rotate from week to week.

“One of the things that’s come up in New York over the last couple of years is the food truck revolution,” said Brookfield V.P. David Cheikin, when he explained the plan to Community Board 1’s Battery Park City Committee. “It’s not just bad food anymore and it’s at a good price point.”  “They want to start as soon as possible,” Cheikin said.

In answer to questions from the committee about how much control Brookfield would have over the vendors, Cheikin said, “We would never let dirty-water dogs down here. We think it will actually be a good amenity.” He said the trucks would be selling items like waffles, steak sandwiches, healthy foods and shakes. And if the food trucks don’t work out? “I have the right to kick them out,” he said. [Downtown Express]

We’re sure that once people in the area try these food trucks, they will be hooked.

DOWNTOWN STREET FOOD FAIR GOING ON NOW!

July 9th, 2010

NYSF reader Sarah just sent us the above photo related to an earlier tip she sent us about a street food mini-fair today on Broad St between South & Water St.  Looks like there are at least 25-30 different vendors there.

Sarah’s report – According to Alex from the street fairs org (met him at one of the sausage stands, wearing his official t-shirt and badge), this is a street fair put on by the City, due to roam throughout the city on other Fridays. Typical summer street fair fare of sausage & onions, funnel cake, gyro, smoothies, arepas, roasted corn, Thai, falafel, lemonade, crepes, and burritos, plus the additional cheap clothing and accessories stands. The place is already filled with folks, proof that if you build it, they will come. Alex said to check the schedule at Nycstreetfairs.com

While you’re enjoying your food, there’s also an unrelated River-to River dance performance by the Alice Farley Dance Theater at noon and 1:15 called HellGate Love Letter on the space outside One NY Plaza.

Gotta love summer in this city!  Thanks for the tip Sarah.
