Street Eats: Kim-Cheesesteak From Kimchi Taco Truck

December 14th, 2012

We were in the mood for a cheesesteak for lunch, but neither of the two food trucks in NYC serving cheesesteaks were nearby. One vendor nearby though was the Kimchi Taco Truck, who have one of the more unusual dishes around, a kim-cheesesteak. We’ve tried the beef about a year and a half ago, but never the chicken.

Korean fusion cuisine is very popular these days, with Korean tacos and burritos gaining a toehold in the lunchtime routines of New Yorkers. Kimchi Taco Truck gives it another twist with their kim-cheesesteak.

One of the things Philadelphia is known for (besides cheesesteaks) is soul music, with the O-Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Gamble & Huff and others. This sandwich is more like Philly Seoul. (Whew, that was a long way to go for one joke.)

Street Eats: Pizza Steak Sandwich from Phil’s Steaks

September 28th, 2012

After seeing Phil’s Steaks win the 2012 Vendy Award for Rookie of the Year, we’ve been meaning to stop by the truck to congratulate them. Yesterday we had that opportunity, and it also gave us a chance to see if there was anything new on the menu.

Yes, there were a few new menu items, including a pizza steak and a vegetarian option! How do you place that order? One cheese steak, hold the steak.

Actually, the vegetarian option is sauteed mushrooms, fried onions, hot & sweet peppers and your choice of cheese. That doesn’t sound half bad, although we can’t imagine any vegetarian ordering cheez wiz. We bet they go with the provolone.

We weren’t that hungry, so we ordered a 6″ pizza steak for $7.50 instead of our usual 10″ sandwich, which would have been $10.50 for the pizza steak.

For a small sandwich, this was pretty darn big. Two slices of provolone cheese were put on a 6″ roll, which was loaded with thinly-sliced steak, then topped with marinara sauce.

Shorty’s Opening A Place In FiDi

We got some news hot off the press late yesterday from Evan Stein, owner of Shorty’s, Shorty’s On Wheels and Lil’ Shorty’s.

Shorty’s just signed a lease for a new bar/restaurant located at 62 Pearl St in the Financial District, a few steps from Broad St.

This isn’t a tiny takeout and delivery window like Lil’ Shorty’s. It’s a 2,000 sq ft emporium, along the lines of the the Shorty’s on Madison Ave. Like the other 2 Shorty’s, expect lots of food, drink and sports.

Evan told us they will be working hard to open by Christmas. Cheesesteaks for Christmas, we like the sound of that.

Street Eats: Cheesesteak from Shorty’s On Wheels

A while back we told you about Shorty’s, a Philly-centric sports bar with two locations here in NYC that was opening a food truck called Shorty’s On Wheels.  During our First Look, we had a delicious Italian roast pork special sandwich.  For our second visit, we had to try a classic Philly cheesesteak.

The truck has been on and off the street for the past couple of weeks getting their act together, but we caught up with them last week on 47th St & Park Ave.  A classic Philly cheesesteak was $9 and we added mushrooms for $.75.

Coolhaus & Shorty’s: A Match Made In Heaven

June 1st, 2012

We stopped by Shorty’s On Wheels yesterday and checked in with the owner, Evan Stein. Wouldn’t you know it, he actually had hot-off-the-press news to deliver.

Earlier in the day, Shorty’s and Coolhaus had just finalized a relationship. Both Shorty’s locations and Shorty’s On Wheels will be selling Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches for dessert.

Now after you have one of these:

You can have one of these.

Now that’s a match made in heaven!

Speaking of matches made in heaven and delivering good news, Evan’s wife is due to give birth to their first child any second now.  Our best wishes to the mom and pop to be.
