There are too many examples to list of food trucks that later opened restaurants or stores. Go Burger is in the minority of food trucks because they had a restaurant first, then opened a food truck.

I’ve had a bunch of enjoyable meals from Go Burger, but never had their BLT Burger. I’m not a huge fan of BLT sandwiches, but really, how can you go wrong with bacon?

Today’s Lunch is a BLT Burger ($7.50 plus $1 extra for cheese) and skinny fries ($3) from Go Burger.

The burger wasn’t one of those monster-sized burgers you sometimes see, but it was a decent size. The burger itself had a nice flavor to it, with the meat seasoned nicely – and it was cooked to medium, as I asked.

The burger was topped with lettuce, tomato, red onions, a pickle and “BLT Burger Sauce”. I got cheddar cheese, but you can also get American or provolone cheese. The “BLT Burger Sauce” was along the lines of thousand island dressing, being a mix or ketchup and mayo with a few other ingredients.

This was a tasty burger, with fresh top-notch ingredients all around. It may not be the biggest burger around, but I’ll gladly take quality over quantity any time.

I then moved on to the skinny fries, which were excellent. I don’t like soft, mushy fries, and these babies were crisp and salted just right. The inside was soft and potatoey, and the outside was crispy. Great job!

I’m not crazy about spending over $12 (after tax) for a bacon cheeseburger deluxe, but if I’m going to, it damn well better be good. Today’s Lunch from Go Burger was.

Sean from Feed Your Hole is always playing around with his menu, and he came up with a few new things that I wanted to try.

The Diesel Burger sounded good, but what I really wanted to check out was his new invention – bacon jam!

Other new menu items are the Sloppy Nutz Burger (burger topped w/chili & peanut butter) and the Reuben Eggroll (pastrami, sauerkraut & swiss cheese, deep fried). You can see the current burger menu here and the hot dog menu here.

Today’s Lunch is a Diesel Burger ($8) with bacon jam added, and an order of fries ($3).

The Diesel Burger has cheddar cheese, ranch dressing and bacon – but I really wanted to try the new bacon jam, so I asked Sean to put some on the burger. Doesn’t that look tasty?

The burger was thick and cooked to medium, with pink in the middle.

The bacon jam was actually what it sounds like – crumbled bacon mixed in with jam, which gave the burger that sweet and salty thing. This was a delicious, satisfying lunch, and one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while.

The fries from Feed Your Hole were seasoned a bit more than fries from most other places. I could taste sea salt and paprika. I’m not exactly sure what else was in there, but there were definitely other spices.

Today’s Lunch from Feed Your Hole was wonderful. A nice thick, juicy, tasty burger with bacon, bacon jam and cheddar cheese. The menu said there was ranch dressing on the Diesel Burger, but I didn’t really taste it. Doesn’t matter – it was still a great lunch. A little bit of bacon heaven!

Frites ‘N’ Meats has a Burger of the Week that I haven’t tried yet – The Texan.

The Texan burger is an outgrowth of their work with Maker’s Mark bourbon. Even though the most famous bourbons come from Kentucky (Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam) and Tennessee (Jack Daniels), they named this burger The Texan. Go figure.

Whether it’s from Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky or New York, I still wanted to try this burger. Today’s Lunch is The Texan from Frites ‘N’ Meats ($9.50).

The Texan is an Angus beef patty with provolone cheese, lightly battered onions, applewood smoked bacon and their Maker’s Mark bourbon BBQ sauce.

The bourbon was apparent right away, with the definite taste of alcohol in the BBQ sauce. The strongest bourbon flavor was in the first bite, and it mellowed as lunch progressed.

The BBQ sauce was very tasty, with a little sweetness and a little alcohol kick. It went well with the burger and onions, and even better with the bacon.

The burger was cooked to medium, with a little pink in the middle. The flame-grilled flavor of the burger came through great. A burger cooked on those flattop grills just can’t compete with a flame-grilled burger.

There were two large pieces of bacon on the burger, plus plenty of onions. The batter came off some of the onions, but it didn’t matter because the batter was still on the burger. Either way I got it.

In my opinion, the provolone cheese was wasted. It got buried and I didn’t really taste it. I would have preferred a sharp cheddar, but if they want to stick with a southwestern theme, pepper jack cheese would have been a good option too.

Moving on to the bun, it was excellent. You get a choice of three different types of buns – brioche, potato-onion or sesame seed. I forgot to specify, but was very happy with the sesame seed bun. It was soft and eggy, and stood up to all the fixings inside.

Today’s Lunch of The Texan from Frites ‘N’ Meats was very good. The bourbon BBQ sauce, bacon and onions are a great combo on top of a nicely grilled burger. A stronger cheese would have been appreciated, but overall lunch was delicious. The Texan definitely gets the NYSF seal of approval.

Over the weekend, we stopped by Eat Here Now Now Eat Here to pick up brunch. They are on 16th St under the High Line from Tues-Fri, and are on Hudson St & 12th St on Sat & Sun. The cart is open from 8am-4pm, which makes sense because one of their most popular dishes is a breakfast burrito, although they serve it all day.

I’ve previously enjoyed their breakfast burrito, but my wife never had one until Saturday. She liked it as much as I did. It has eggs, cheese, onions, poblano peppers, a mild hot sauce and some other stuff (like the tortilla you can see in the picture below).

breakfast burrito

The 2011 Vendy Award Finalist for Rookie of the Year has simplified their menu for a couple of reasons. Stan told me that now he can work the cart by himself, and the menu revisions are designed to cut down the waiting times.

In addition to the breakfast burrito, Stan now has a grass fed burger, crab cakes and quesadillas. He removed tacos from the menu, but you can get crab cakes in either a sandwich or in a quesadilla.

I ordered a crab cake sandwich and a burger to split with a friend, so we got to try two of the new items, and later on I heard from a NYSF reader who had the crab quesadilla.

crab cake sandwich

The crab cake sandwich was deceptive. Each bite was mainly tasty, flaky crab meat, but the seasoning had a distinct kick to it. There was Old Bay seasoning and plenty of black pepper, and I think there was some horseradish in there too.

The seasoning didn’t overpower the sandwich, but added just the right amount of seasoning and heat. You have to be careful with crab meat because it can’t take too much seasoning or spiciness without being overwhelmed. This was a delicious crab cake sandwich, and a good deal at $8.

Coincidentally, I also got an email from Sally, who is visiting from London and went to Eat Here Now Now Eat Here on Saturday too. She asked me for street food recommendations during her visit, and told me she had “his AMAZING crab quesadilla” (her quote and caps). I’ll have to try that one on my next trip to Eat Here Now Now Eat Here.

The burger was pretty tasty too. It was cooked to medium and had a nice, beefy flavor. The patty was on the thin side, but tasted good served with some mayo and pickles.

If there was a weak spot, it was the buns. I like sesame seed buns, but these were very soft and got “mushed up” fairly easily. With a better bun, the crab cake sandwich would have been excellent instead of very good, and the burger would have been very good instead of just good.

I had some time to talk with Stan, the owner of Eat Here Now Now Eat Here, and he told me that you’ll be seeing more of him around town very soon.

Stan wants to be more mobiler, and he showed me a photo of the type of food truck he is looking to buy. It’s not going to be the smallest food truck in the world, but it will look like nothing else on the NYC streets. You’ll just have to wait to see this one. Stan hopes to have his food truck ready to go some time in January.

Until then, you’ll have to stop by 16th St under the High Line or the West Village on weekends for delicious crab cakes, crab quesadillas, breakfast burritos and burgers.

Feed Your Hole haven’t been tweeting much lately because they think it attracts too much attention from the police and other merchants, but they are still around, and pretty popular judging by the number of people around the truck.

There were about 10 people around the truck waiting for their orders, and I must say, it took too long from ordering to receiving lunch. You could see on everyone’s faces they were kept waiting too long, and there was a lot of grumbling going on. I know everything is made and cooked fresh, but he needs to get the serving time down.

During the summer, Sean decided to change his burger menu to sliders, and I haven’t gotten to try them all. Today’s Lunch is 3 sliders from Feed Your Hole. It costs $5 for one, $8 for two and $10 for three. I went for the Bourbon Mes, Mini Nut and the aptly-named Syc Fuk.

The Bourbon Mes

The first one I picked up was the Bourbon Mes, which has sauteed mushrooms, fried shallots, bourbon peach bbq sauce and swiss cheese. Wow! This was a taste sensation, with a lot going on.

The shallots were like little frizzles on top of the burger, the bbq sauce was spicy and fruity, and the mushrooms added some depth of flavor and texture. Extremely delicious, and a good sized slider.

Mini Nut

While the above is not my best photo, the Mini Nut was pretty crazy. Creamy peanut butter and crispy bacon, what’s not to love? This slider was pretty tasty too – just make sure you have a drink handy. You will need it.

You will understand the name of the last slider after I tell you the ingredients. The Syc Fuk starts with roasted serrano chile cream cheese on the bottom, then the slider, and it’s topped with a habanero strawberry glaze. Creamy, sweet, spicy and fruity were all in there, along with a nice, meaty slider. This was an interesting creation, and I mean that as a compliment.

Syc Fuk

Today’s Lunch from Feed Your Hole was excellent in terms of the toppings, although the doneness was all over the place. The Mini Nut was a bit well done for my taste, the Syc Fuk was rare, and the Bourbon Mes was cooked to medium.

My main complaint with sliders is too much bread and not enough meat, but these sliders were thick, with a good meat to bread ratio – and the toppings were first rate.

The main problem was the waiting time. People don’t usually have a lot of time for lunch, so getting the serving times down is important to have people coming back another time.

With The Frying Dutchmen installing a new grill in their truck last week, they are now serving burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches in addition to french fries, chicken tenders and chicken wings.

As I usually do with new menus or trucks, I asked what they recommended, and the answer was the interestingly-named Black & Blue Burger ($7). I love blue cheese, but the connotation of black and blue is a little odd when eating lunch. You can see The Frying Dutchmen’s new burger menu here and new chicken menu here.

The Frying Dutchmen also lets you upgrade any burger to a combo for $4 more, which includes a medium-sized cone of regular or sweet potato fries, a dipping sauce and a drink. That’s what I did for Today’s Lunch, which cost $11.

In addition to black Angus beef and blue cheese, the Black & Blue burger had lettuce, onions, buffalo sauce and buffalo chips (buffalo flavored potato chips, not these.)

I unwrapped the burger, and there was a large bun inside. I opened up the bun to take a look under the hood, and the burger was on the small side. I don’t know if the burger seemed small because the bun was so big, but they need to coordinate the bun and burger size better. There was too much bread left over at the end of eating the burger.

The blue cheese came through immediately on the first bite, and it was a good one. None of this blue cheese sauce or dressing nonsense. It was crumbled blue cheese, and they weren’t shy about putting on a decent amount. Very nice!

I also liked having the buffalo chips on the burger. They added some crunch, which sounds strange for a burger, but it worked. The chips also added a little more buffalo flavor, but their primary effect was textural. It was a good idea adding the chips.

The burger itself was a bit well done, but I realize the grill is brand new, and they are still working out the kinks.

I got sweet potato fries and the Southern Style BBQ dipping sauce. The sweet potato fries were delicious overall, although a few were overdone, and there were a huge amount of fries in the cone. I enjoyed the Southern style BBQ dipping sauce, which was smoky and had a small vinegary kick to it. I think the bbq sauce would have been better on regular fries, but that was my doing, not theirs. Sweet potato fries need more of a sweet of fruity sauce.

Today’s Lunch from The Frying Dutchmen was good, but they still have a few things to work out with the new menu. Ben told me he wanted some feedback because they want to get things right. Here it is.

I will definitely be back to check out some of the other new menu items in a week or two. The breakfast burger sounds interesting, and I want to check out the bbq chicken sandwich too.

I’ve been to Bistro Truck plenty of times, but never tried their lamb burger. A couple of months ago, in order to stand out a bit from other food trucks serving burgers, Yassir switched from a beef burger to a lamb burger.

Lamb is generally more expensive than beef, but Today’s Lunch of a lamb burger from Bistro Truck was only $7.

The burger was thick, and it was on a large eggy bun covered with cheddar cheese. It took a lot to get my mouth around the entire thing, but I managed.

The burger was cooked to medium, with a bit of pink in the middle. Ground lamb is a red meat, but has a dfferent taste than beef, a little meatier-tasting. The lamb burger was very tender and juicy.

The cheddar cheese had an edge that went perfectly with ground lamb, which has a stronger taste than beef. It also melted really well, which is not always the case with cheddar cheese.

As I said, the bun was eggy, but it was also thick and very soft. There was lettuce, tomato and a small amount of harissa mayo on the burger too.

Today’s Lunch of a lamb burger from Bistro Truck was very good. It’s not easy standing out from the crowd with a burger these days, but Bistro Truck pulled it off well with their lamb burger. No wonder they were Vendy Award Finalists in 2010.

I stopped by the fairly new Wall St Burgers truck today to try a burger. They have been around since mid-June, but have spent a lot of days parked way uptown by the CUNY campus. They now seem to be coming down to the middle and lower part of Manhattan more frequently.

On our First Look, we enjoyed a salmon burger, but have not had a chance to try a regular cheeseburger.

Today’s Lunch is a Wall St Burger combo ($10) from Wall St Burgers, which includes a cheeseburger, curly fries and a drink.

As for their menu, if you don’t get the combo, a single is $4.50, a double is $6.50, and add $1 more if you want cheese. Curly fries are $3.50, so a Wall St Burger combo saves you $1 and keeps lunch from exceeding the $10 price point. You can see their full menu here.

The Wall St Burger comes with American cheese, lettuce, red onions, pickles, tomatoes and WSB sauce. I wish I could tell you what the WSB sauce was, but there wasn’t enough on the burger to taste it.

The burger itself was very rare, which was surprising because it was on the thin side. The burger was wider than most other burgers I’ve had on the street, but thinner. It tasted good, but I would recommend a double if you have a decent sized appetite.

The curly fries were well-seasoned, with a liberal amount of salt and other seasonings, but not too much. I liked the curly fries.

Today’s Lunch from Wall St Burgers was ok, but to be honest, I enjoyed the salmon burger more than the regular cheeseburger. $10 was a bit steep for this lunch, so either the prices need to come down, or the burger needs to be beefed up (pardon the pun).

I would recommend the salmon burger though, which you don’t see anywhere else on the NYC streets.

A relatively new addition to the New York Street Food scene is the Katchkie Truck. I’ve only eaten there once, a few weeks ago, but their pulled bbq chicken sandwich was phenomenal!

The truck has a small menu with only a farm burger, farm veggie burger and either a pulled bbq chicken or pork sandwich. Last week when I was at the truck for the second time, it was chicken, and since I’ve already had that, I went for the farm burger ($10).

The Katchkie Truck doesn’t offer a la carte – you can only get a meal for lunch which includes a sandwich, side dish, salad and a drink, which was fresh strawberry lemonade both times I went there. Yum!

Much of the food at the Katchkie Truck comes from their eponymous farm in upstate New York. Locally sourced food is good, but from your own farm is even better.

The burger came on a Martin’s potato bun with NY State cheddar cheese and a slice of tomato from their farm. I also asked for ketchup and mustard on the side.

I grew up in New York, where people don’t put mustard on burgers, but I got into the habit when visiting my cousin in Atlanta several times as a teenager. They often put mustard and ketchup on burgers down south, and I liked it.

Digging into the burger, it was pretty tasty, but a bit too well done. The burger itself had a nice flavor to it, but I would have liked at least a little pink in the middle. The burger came from a place called Meiller’s Farm, so I wasn’t as worried about eating it rare as if it came from one of those giant factories, where beef gets contaminated regularly.

The burger was average sized, so don’t expect a huge pile of beef, but with the cheese, tomato, bun and sides, there was plenty of food.

There are 3 side dishes to choose from – cole slaw, potato salad and an heirloom tomato/cucumber salad. I usually get cole slaw, but had that last time, so I got the potato salad.

The potato salad was made with hard boiled eggs, dill, mayo and something with a little bite like scallions or chives. I really like egg in my potato salad, and this was no exception, making it a very tasty side dish.

The Farm Burger from Katchkie Farms was pretty good. The burger was a little too done, but even if if was cooked to medium, it would have been tough to top that pulled bbq chicken sandwich from a few weeks ago. That lunch was definitely in my top 5 lunches so far this year.

The two women in front of me on line got veggie burgers, which looked good too, but what I really want to try next is the pulled bbq pork sandwich.
