How Was Our Watermelon Freak Juice at Food Freaks Grilled Cheese?

We got some good news recently on our Mobile Munchies twitter feed. Food Freaks Grilled Cheese was going to be back in Central Park, and this time, they were even closer to our office.

In May, the Food Freaks cart was at 60th St & 5th Ave by the Central Park Zoo entrance on Mondays & Tuesdays. Now they are at the Central Park entrance at 59th St & 6th Ave, which is walking distance from my office.

I asked what the deal was with this cockamamie schedule of theirs, and they told me the Parks Dept was granting month-to-month licenses for some locations. So listen up. The Food Freaks Grilled Cheese Cart is going to be at the 59th St & 6th Ave entrance to Central Park on Mondays & Tuesdays for the month of July. You can’t miss the yellow cart with the big “F” right by the statue of José Marti.

Wanting to try something new, I ordered the Fort Greene sandwich, which cost $7.25. When the cart is not at Central Park, their regular spot is by Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, so I expect this should be one of their better sandwiches.

With this heat, I also ordered Watermelon Freak Juice for $3.25.

After waiting about 10 minutes, I got my sandwich and drink and walked over to one of the park benches in the shade to enjoy lunch.

The Fort Greene sandwich is made with sourdough bread, fontinella cheese, avocado slices, pieces of slab bacon, and a cilantro spread.  This was an excellent combination of ingredients that played off each other well.

The fontinella cheese (not fontina) was creamy but had a little bit of an edge, which went well with the salty bacon and the herbiness of the cilantro spread.  On grilled sourdough bread, it was even better.

My first bite had a square piece of slab bacon, and I thought that was a great idea. In too many sandwiches and burgers the bacon is sliced, and it doesn’t always bite apart easily. How many times have you had a whole slice of bacon pull out of the sandwich on the first bite? That can’t happen with pieces of slab bacon, making the sandwich easier to eat.

I haven’t mentioned the avocado yet, but it definitely brought something to the table, adding a veggie flavor that helped round out the sandwich. The avocado was not the predominant flavor, but it did accent the sandwich.

While I was eating the Fort Greene sandwich, I was also enjoying the Watermelon Freak Juice. This was a large 12 oz. cup of watermelon juice with lime juice steeped in muddled mint leaves. Nice and refreshing for a hot, sunny day, although it wasn’t as minty as expected.

As I said above, Food Freaks Grilled Cheese will be at the 59th St & 6th Ave entrance to Central Park on Mondays & Tuesdays in July. On other days, they are by Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. To be sure, check their twitter here or our Mobile Munchies twitter feed.

We haven’t had anything but delicious, creative sandwiches from Food Freaks Grilled Cheese, so take our word for it and give them a try. You’ll be glad you did.
